Is Boro a derby?

When I was born Boro was in North Yorkshire officially. I personally do think it's a Derby game. 30 miles away. I actually don't mind Boro. The Geordies I don't like. However to me it's a Derby. So is Hartlepool and Darlo if we played them
What's the thoughts?
100% agree. Wife is from Boro . All boro fans I have met are good lads. Decent club. Whereas mags , fuck them.

no - the boro lot think both us and the mags are derbys.
It's a local fixture, but not a rivalry.
Just because Police and Boro fans treat it like a derby, doesn’t mean I think it’s a derby. I’ve never once got nervous over a Boro game, that might be different for other prople. Like I said; Each to their own.
when we get beat tomorrow, it won't bother me too much other than its another defeat and #BealeOut.
Hate losing to the mags. spoils my weekend!

Normally takes me a few weeks to get over losing to the Mags. The 5-1 was absolutely awful, especially working with the fuckers. I’ve never once felt like that, over losing to the Boro.

No. Never has been never will be. Playing Leeds has more signifigance than playing the mutants
You state it “never has been “ just wondering how come you make that Conclusion . My first away game was at Boro early 60 s where on the train my uncle explained the meanings of Derby’s . Started working in every shipyard on Wear ,where football was the dominant conversation. Never heard anybody ever say it wasn’t a Derby . My uncle had a Collection of Echo’s and Football Echo’s from 50 s to 90 s where they are countless references to Derby games against Boro .
Read all the letters in Football Echo in that period ,where just before we played Boro and afterwards there loads of references to Derby game . Never came on one letter starting it wasn’t a Derby .
If someone thinks it’s not Derby I respect their opinion . However when people say it was never a Derby are simply trying to rewrite history to suit their agenda

Not another Boro derby thread.yet it is just not the main one

Don't mind Boro at all. Wanted them to progress in the cup. No build up to the game unlike a proper Derby.

The answer lies in all the coverage up to the mags Cup game vs the last week. Nothing at all last 7 days.

Nowhere near. I do enjoy the games against them though as they think it's a Derby so they get all excited.

It's a derby . Middlesbrough is part of the north east. Don't know why people go out of their way to say it isn't. It has nowhere near the same feeling that Newcastle does, but it's a derby nonetheless.

You lot Southport then? 😉
I mean, you wouldn't do the black cats bar up for us would you? Clearly hate us.
It is laughable. As a boro fan obviously I know the derby is the mags against them massive no question at all .totally blows us out of the water a million times over.
But some of the loons on here saying its like playing Carlisle or Leicester. I've been going to boro v sunlun games for 50 years and from the reaction of sunlun fans at the games. It doesn't feel like that to me .
This thread pops up every year I've been on here

Boro is in Yorkshire, south of the Tees isn’t the North East.

Middlesbrough and surrounding areas culturally moved yonks ago 100% in the NE whether it’s News, travel links, Radio, football, accent (North Eastern) you put a mackem, Teessider & someone from Sheffield/Leeds you’ll find there’s far more in common with a Teessider & Mackem than Yorkshire folk…. As I said previously got to be of a certain age to regard Boro as a Yorkshire town imo. If you google it will say “ceremonial purposes” whatever that means, nothing.

I just think it’s got to that point were no one really cares anymore, every time Sunderland play Boro it’s this, over and over again..

Boro fan here Yorkshire, Yorkshire, Yorkshire!

Just been Confirmed on Look North that it is a Derby...... We have been wrong all these Years...Who Wudda Thunk It... 🤷‍♂️

Not a Derby, they are in Yorkshire ffs
The problem with the “it’s not a derby, they’re in the next county” line of logic is that it means we don’t have a derby at all, unless you count that occasional cup game against Hartlepool.

I’m in the a derby, not the derby camp. Theyre our next-door neighbours in one direction, but not our nearest neighbours. It’s a bigger deal for them because we are their nearest neighbours. It’s a bit childish the way they get worked up about it not being such a big deal for us. it’s a bit childish the way we overdo the just another game bit in reaction.

Funnily enough we don't chant "we hate Leicester" when they rock up to Sunderland, so its a completely redundant point. For me, after the mags game, its the game I look forward to the most.

You look at the clubs in the North West (outside the two Manchester and Liverpool clubs) Preston, Blackpool, Blackburn, Burnley, Bolton, Wigan. You've obviously got the main Derbys that will mean more amongst those clubs. But each game is seen as a Lancashire derby and built up as more of an occasion, equaling better crowds and better atmospheres. Football is sterile enough without games like these.

Hope we batter them on Sunday.

Think our 2 posts from opposite sides of the divide nailed it for me .
