Mags fanzone in Durham

Aye, my work is based in Darlington and there are a surprising number of people who identify as Newcastle fans (they seem fairly half arsed about it, if I'm honest).
The pricks are properly half arsed, every SAFC fan I've bumped into in Darlo has a season ticket or has in the past and actually knows what they are talking about. Loads of MLFs about they just don't go broadcasting it in gravy stained strips.

The way so many mags aged so 35+ conduct their daily Business donning their black and white shirt is embarrassing. I understand if people are going to a game or even wearing it on the day of a game, but many wear it for the sake of it. They’ll always give off the perception of having more fans in most towns in the north east due to this.

Once again South Tyneside proves it is THE premier Sunderland strong hold.

Yes. South Tyneside. I think a lot of reasons why it appears the borough is a stronghold of Sunderland support is that our Newcastle United fans are better behaved than others from areas such as Durham.

A lot has been discussed above Newcastle United supporters from Durham more so than the concept of a fan zone in Durham City but what of Newcastle United supporters elsewhere?

Working in ASDA I see a wide demographic of football support. I see children and adults with a diverse choice of replica football shirts both home and away and those who are Newcastle United fans I don’t have any issues with. Ok wearing my store uniform they would not be remotely aware that I follow Sunderland but one fan who knows I am I get along well with. And I am sure even if other Newcastle fans knew I was a fan of Sunderland they would not behave anywhere near as badly as Newcastle supporters from elsewhere. I believe they have well rounded and sensible heads on their shoulders. They aren’t obsessed with the same things Newcastle fans are who live elsewhere. They just go quietly about their business.

You denying he was caught flatfooted?
Well how was he? If you mean he got the stadium next to Nissan wrong then ok, but I remember the club under Murray talking about the need for new stadium as far back as 1990. He wasn't complacent in that regard. The scum were nowhere but appointed Keegan and we know what happened after that. Not Murray's fault.

incorrect
i know a load in Stanley that go to the games , proximity has always been a factor
Not incorrect just your personal experience of who you know and speak to.

I know lots of people in Stanley and Consett areas who profess to be mags who don’t go to games, were only attracted to them back in 1992 or since the takeover…… times in between you hardly knew they were bothered about football.

He was absolutely caught flat footed. We lost a generation of fans.

Same thing is happening now when the media are blowing smoke up their arse continually whilst the saudi’s spunk money, in the meantime we are trying to deal with the fallout of multiple relegations and being asset stripped by two absolute chancers who were gifted the club.

How?

I've never bought into that nonsense like. The only people losing a generation of fans are failed fathers.

I was young and at my most impressionable at the height of the Keegan, McDermott and Hall (Fuck them all!) era. There was not a fuckin chance I'd have been owt but a Sunderland supporter. Same goes for a lot of mates and lads of my generation. Our dad's took us to Roker, and we wound up filling the SoL.

My mate's two little lads are growing up in deepest, darkest Wallsend (their lass wanted to move back home). He had his eldest at his first match dressed top to bottom in red and white on New Year's Day.

Just googled it, looks lifting
Nevermind the mag connection, anyone wanting to watch a match, say England wouldn't say, let's go to that Bohemia bar.
Bottomless brunch faux only way is Essex type venue.
Unfortunately gained some publicity by clutching at straws. Fuck em.

Exactly this.
My son was brought up away from the north east surrounded by fans of far more successful clubs. Took him to games and gave him 2 stock answers to any one taking the piss:
I don’t support them cos they’re good, I support them cos they’re my team
How many times have you seen your team play

It worked every time and he is respected amongst his mates for following the lads and they all have us as a second team

In fairness Murray getting us the SOL provided us the potential and foundations to be one of the finest clubs in the land, we just haven't realised it yet. Reading his autobiography was quite interesting, the Nissan move was all set to go ahead, but I am delighted it did not. Naturally its all his version of events but I do think on balance he is the best owner we have had in anyone's living memory, albeit the best of a bad bunch. Our gates at the moment are actually historically above what we usually get in the second tier, though post-COVID most clubs in the land get better crowds.

As he himself points out, from the top 20 richest clubs in the world to relegation so quickly, much like 2015 - 2017. He blames Reid's foreign transfer dealings more than anything else.
I haven't yet seen his book. I agree with Murray regarding Reid's transfer activity. But Murray was too loyal to him. Murray had problems of boardroom politics, an ageing ground that required a fortune spending on it and inheriting a team related to the Third Division.
The 15 point season was the trade-off for the club not going into administration. We had won promotion witb a Other clubs would have conveniently thrown the towel in and have their debts written off. Murray, who had put a million into the club with the share rights issue, had too much of his skin in the game to allow this to happen. Even with McCarthy's frugal make do and mend mentality and subsequent promotion season the debts had not been reduced much, merely the situation prevented from getting worse. Compare our situation with Newcastle. Freddie Shepherd recklessly built up a huge debt at Newcastle, took a fortune out of the club in dividends ( Murray did not ) then sold on to Ashley and by doing so took more money out. In comparison, our chairman and major shareholder built up a fantastic charitable organisation and left the club in the hands of Quinn and a group of Irishmen and John Hays.
