Drinking in Sunderland City Centre - restored

Decided to head across early on Saturday for the match and have a few pre match beers in town.

Thinking about a spot of breakfast somewhere about 10 and then on the beers anyone got any suggestions

Haven’t been in Sunderland centre for donkeys as drink near the ground on match days.
Gatsby’s do a canny breakfast, think it’s bout £6

No one says Merrills is good any more. It was years ago but was taken over by the usual suspects. Same as Gills. Not sure about recently, but at least they used to have posters up of Mr Gill holding a huge silver platter of fish and chips. If you read the information underneath, it did say that they try to source cod but an alternate would be used (basa or pollock). Thats why nowadays I always ask for Cod and chips wherever I go ( apart from B&Q, Greggs, Flannels etc) before any smart arse interjects. I always keep away from places that do pizzas, kebabs etc as well as fish and chips. Humbledon chippy on Ettrick grove a prime example. Used to be canny when it first opened but got taken over, added more to the menu and went from a 9/10 to a 3/10.
Who are ‘the usual suspects’ that you refer to?

If you can hang onto 11 then I'd recommend the fish shop on Blandford St where Greggs used to be, its an actual hidden gem. Cheap and portion sizes are massive.

People always bang on about overpriced places like Merills and other Gills fishy's being the best fishy's in Sunderland but this ones an actual contender as its cheap and portion sizes are around the same.
Do they ?
Its been shite for a lot of years now, which I thought was common knowledge.

Ocean chippy isn’t it
It’s very good

Park Lane was chocka too (aye, I'm one of them types ) . Really good night overall for the town.

Park Lane is the best bit about town imo. Cleo's Gatsbys Glitterball all great bars, the idiots tend to stay away and stay on Vine Place also or Derwent St which is actually the biggest received 999 calls for Sunderland. If someone took the old Innfusion/What used to be Boots downstairs it would be another great addition
