Are you trying to say its because the tories are in, we are getting a load of investment?
I didn't say that, someone said the lack of investment from the Conservatives baffles them as to why anyone would vote them, but I can't recall us getting any more investment under Labour? What exactly was happening in Sunderland then that was so great? Serious question.

You can guarantee, if Labour were in Government, they'd be getting credited with the development and investment opportunities we're currently witnessing in Sunderland.

The funding is obviously coming from somewhere. I think we're seeing the fruits of finally having the right people in top positions at local level, certainly in the development team.

It's easy to Google all the services that have been cut by the tories since 2010 mate.Homeless outreach, youth clubs,mental health outreach, huge cuts in health and education etc. It's quite remarkable really. What I actually saw with my own eyes under labour(I live in washington) was every secondary school rebuilt or modernised. A lot of playgrounds built. I think they are quite important things. I agree with you about now though, we are moving on and seem to have good people in charge at a local level( despite lots of council cuts from central government).
 
Not in the know in any way but follow regeneration and railways via a couple of magazines so as up to date as a lay person can be.

City Council has worked closely with Network Rail and other partners to facilitate the first stage.

They have already bought buildings to facilitate the north entrance, possibly involving demolition but not yet determined.

Phase 3 is the underground works which will help but the two north bound tracks will still be shared with heavy rail through to Pelaw.

Freight trains carrying biomass from the Port of Tyne to Drax and returning empty, ten minute frequency metros and more and more Grand Central travelling to and from Heaton for servicing.

There isn't the capacity for many more trains to run hence your Leamside reopening making sense.

Everyone, including the council and Network, have publicly stated their support for phases 2 and 3 but it will take some time and lots of money, all big rail investment schemes do.

Nothing compared to what has been, is being and is going to be spent in and around Sunderland.

We shouldn't really complain about the successful delivery of phase 1 of a multiphase scheme, surely.
I noticed walking under St Peter’s metro station after the match on Saturday there was a huge Drax freight train slowly heading north it was never ending.

Yes we are importing trees from abroad to burn at Drax so we don't have to dig up the 100+ years worth of coal we have buried in flooded coal mines with houses or football grounds built above them.
 
Was a bit underwhelming when I used it on Friday evening like. Know its a work-in-progress, but considering I'd heard about the "grand opening" there were maybe four benches in the middle of a blank warehouse.

The Metro ticket machines weren't working either, but the sole staff/security lad let us struggle on four a few minutes before letting us know and we had to go back to the Littlewoods entrance anyway...
 
But it's worth asking, where was our investment under Brown and previously under Blair? I can't recall us thriving? What was developed in Sunderland throughout that time?

The development we're seeing now is the best we've seen in decades.
I think the reason we are seeing development now, is because we are no longer "shackled" to the likes of the T&W development Co & One NE aka Tyne no Wear dev Co and One Newcastle. I dont think its a labour / tory thing. Didnt Sunderland apply for footbridge funding way back and had no joy (rumour that John Hall somehow blocked it but no idea how true that is). Odd that years later after divorcing ourselves from these quangos we are finally seeing investment. Years ago we voted against a regional assembly (imagine everybody in Sunderland knew what would happen) imagine the money for Sunderland would have been "hoovered" up for some vanity project up the road. Not having a chip on shoulder which is first reaction on here or "salty" mackems the new one. I just want what is right and fair for Sunderland especially when public money involved. Equally I dont think Hetton, Washington should suffer if millions spent on Sunderland city centre is detrimental to those areas.

As example the Millennium Fund under the chairmanship of Sir John Hall (let’s not mention which party he actively sports) made sure a foot bridge was built on the Tyne. Sunderland had to wait 25 years but at least it’s getting done

Yes it's very empty, but it's also alot better than the eye sore which the old station.

And for the dumbdumbs who are bringing politics into it, the building is owned by Northern Rail but our local MP has pestered them for over a decade for a new station. Big W for the Labour MP of the Sunderland central.

Northern Rail don’t own the station mate

I believe that it’s owned by Network Rail, leased by Nexus and then operated by Northern. I’m not 100% on that now - it’s been years since I looked at the actual documents.

Nexus are involved somehow because they were ones objecting to Grand Central expansion and improvements.

nexus must have some involvement at the very least as they run services through the station. As you’ve said before I assume the reason for their rejection to an expanded grand central service is due to the impact on their own metro timetable.

If Sunderland gets more services then is there not a rationale that more people will use the metro to Sunderland? Does it make a difference to nexus if they travel to Newcastle or Sunderland?

Probably not but are the individuals doing the objecting mags for the want of a better word? They’d rather people travelled to Newcastle and stocked up on crisps, kitkats and magazines before their long train journeys at the mag WH Smith’s as opposed to any Mackem shop selling similar as it creates employment through there. Seriously.
