It’s a hub and spoke model adopted the world over. Larger and more prosperous cities than Sunderland operate as spokes within transport systems.
As it goes I think the aspiration is to have more services that go southbound and that no reason not to build an attractive new station entrance.
There is no funding secured for the North entrance and the applicable PTE has a history and a policy of blocking the addition of connections to Sunderland.
If you care about Sunderland, which you certainly seem to do, did you know that they had done this? If not, are you surprised / pleased/disappointed/angry about this?

The south entrance project doesn’t deliver that, does it?
You’re referring to a future, potential project which does not have funding secured, and will not be delivered this side of 2030.
What will the south entrance project actually deliver beyond
1. Toikets
2. Seating for six
3. Space for pop-up retail?

Sunderland is never going to be on national routes like Newcastle but the southern entrance is the start of fixing things.
The northern entrance will happen but will take.time , the council own the poundland building now but it won't happen over night.
It's a shame the station has opened with out securing business to take the units but that is down to network rail who maybe need to lower the rent demands.
It's taken years to get this far but at least things have started to happen now and I am not embarrassed by what was the southern entrance

Yes it does…more seating and a couple of vendors will make it a place to comfortably wait for a train.
I’ve used Grand Centrally regularly for work and it’s not fun dodging the tramps early in the morning to get the train.
As I’ve said on this thread, the city needs more platform capacity in order to remove the argument from Nexus (which is supposed to promote rail services on Wearside, after all) from blocking it on grounds of scotch.
I wouldn’t have been fobbed off with the crumbs of funding that we’ve accepted.
The f**king of Sunderland's rail system started with the Germans and has been continued by all governments since.
Nexus are Newcastle based and have no real interest in Sunderland, I was on the metro yesterday and there were 20 minute gaps between trains at crucial times when people were travelling to and from the game. Coincidence, f**king mags

Good thing about future investment is that the new North East combined authority will have a lot of money for transport investment and it is much more likely that the north entrance and platform changes will come, along with getting the metro to Washy and a chord for direct metros from Sunderland to South Shields.
Nexus will not be able to block anything in future.
There is also a realistic chance of some Trans Pennine trains to/from the north west being rerouted along the Durham coast and therefore serving Sunderland.
A better subterranean environment at the station is important but the current set up will not stop the studios coming to the Wear or any other major investment planned or ongoing.
However, the new entrance is wonderful compared to what it has replaced, which was a hovel.
Just accept it as phase one and embrace it.

Ha'way mate it’s a lot better than the Lego building we had last time, actually looks like a train station not a smack heads shoot up place. Theirs places to rent which will probably get decent prime shops their.

Its in the plans. Should we not have built the new entrance until we got the platforms done? You build what you have funding in place for then move on to the next step.
I’m asking ‘what is the south entrance also going to have?’ Help me.
Trampolines? A spar? An e-bike rental facility? Luggage storage? A build-a-bear workshop? Business facilities, such as charging points and printers?
Are any of those going in?

I think the end game is 3 or 4 trains a day to-from the north west and a few more London services, all of which would be fantastic. Sunderland station was an embarrassment, now it’s not.
