The ref (see PGMOL thread)

So, so disappointing to read so many of our fans blaming Dan Neil. I've read many times on here that we don't put enough pressure on the ref when they give wrong decisions, or when they aren't being even handed. And yet, here we have a Wear Tees Derby and a born and bred Sunderland fan and now player, watches as Boro get away with clear and obvious persistent fouling and all targeted at Jack Clarke. He gets frustrated and disputes yet another sonically foul on Clarke, 10 yards from the ref. I'd have been livid if he hadn't pointed out what the ref was clearly letting go. A true professional would have sent any other players away and lectured Dan Neil, giving him a final warning. You see it every game.

I despair at people wanting to take his passion and desire out of the game. I didn't want to see him sent off and I don't want others to be sent off for challenging the ref either, unless they're in his face and threatening.

Can anyone explain if the ref was determined to make it Al about himself he didn't send Neil off for his initial booking? Surely that would have been his chance to be center of attention

Time to let it go, the result won’t change. We might get an apology if we are lucky but I doubt it.

I’m over the result and Boro deserved their win due to how we set up 2nd half.

It’s still gut wrenching that what was shaping up to be a great game was ultimately spoiled by an incompetent referee.

We should be sat here this morning talking about a great game of football. Instead left discussing the biggest wanker on the pitch yesterday (although he’ll probably be delighted all the attention is on on him!)

It's just his lack of awareness for me. Yes, technically a player giving you a bit of lip is a yellow, but in the context of a more highly charged game than usual, and that he'd been getting basic stuff wrong, a ref with any amount of understanding would have given the player a last chance bollocking and told the captain to remind the players about conduct. Instead he just doubled down on his own poor performance and in doing so completely ruined a cracking match.

Neil is a fool for putting himself in the firing line though.
