Russell Martin has Ross Stewart as his main target **Transfer confirmed **

The worry for me is our long term inability to sign a replacement in that position. If he goes and we swap him for a belter so be it but it’s not something we do well
100%!!! people on here having a go at other people for expressing a concern about selling our only competent striker! Even the lad on the way in could turn out to be shite! We simply have to replace Stewart with a competent striker, not a hopeful punt on some kid! And we all know they won’t, that’s what is pissing people off!

I can’t wrap me head round it either. It’s shite and people don’t have to like it but it’s reality. We aren’t going to break our limits, breach FFP and the owner won’t invest anything other than covering our losses at this moment. It’s just mind blowing that other people think he should just throw mountains of cash at us and it’ll all work out. It didn’t work out under short so why’s it going to work now.

Im surprised anyone’s touching him after 2 big injuries, for Southampton it’s low risk with their cash like but if he has one more big on this year he’s damaged goods. Also if he doesn’t he scores 30 goals comfortably like. I can see why we won’t risk the big wage over a long period. He’s 27, this is him at his peak. They will fully believe they can get younger with a higher potential ceiling.

it’s right insight in to some peoples mental health on here, not in a good way.

Why mountains, mate?

I think people realise that if Stewart is determined to be away we’d be better off cashing in now rather than risk losing him for peanuts in January.

The key thing is if he goes we need two strikers before 11pm on Friday not just Rusyn.

I presume the Lihadji fee is covering the outlay for Rusyn so whatever we get for Stewart needs to be reinstated in a replacement.

No excuses in terms of we ran out of time, the market is tough etc etc

At no stage whatsoever has there been any suggestion that he wants to leave. The club has previously said the exact opposite - that he wants to stay and talks were ongoing, etc.

If the apologists are going to dream up an excuse for this one, then “he must have wanted to leave/we can’t keep an unhappy player” isn’t going to cut it.

What most can’t wrap their head around is yet again we were so close to being something, getting promoted, had a brilliant season and probably needed a little tweak. 2/3 players added to the lose of Amad. Couple of injuries added to. But again, all seems to have collapsed in a matter of weeks. We didn’t need to break the bank, we didn’t really need to spend (net highest in the league blah, blah) on players for 2026. That tweak would have paid for the players for 2026 with change in abundance.

anyone have a feeling we might be after a permanent deal for Tom Cannon and maybe this sale would sanction that

Agree. If we end up with just rusyn in and Stewart off then it's piss poor. But it wouldn't surprise me unfortunately. We seem to love running tight up front.

I'll be gutted if we flog him.

Not only because he's class but because for me he represents that day at Wembo and giving me one of my best ever memories. Its ridiculous how the contract situation has played out, I don't just put blame on the club for that but also his agent. He could have had months on a higher wage here had he have signed a deal, which would have safeguarded the club into getting a proper representative fee for him too.

Ultimately I think his agent is in his ear and his head has been turned. I get it, we won't break our pay structure and he can make a wedge more elsewhere.

If he goes and we do sign Rusyn then we still need a striker.

@MurtonMark, you consistently fail to address this question and continue to ignore it:

What if Ross Stewart just does not want to stay at Sunderland?

For all you know, he could have said to the club that no matter what we offer, he wants to go and he's off.

He’s been supposedly ‘in negotiations’ over a new contract for what’s seems like for ever.

Other than the player, his agent and one or two at the club know the truth of things but I’d suggest if he was going to sign he’d have done so by now.

I’d far prefer a fit Ross Stewart in a Sunderland shirt but there comes a point where a decision needs to be made.

I’m far more worried about the ability or willingness the club would have to spend money on a replacement.

This and you can hear them saying Mayenda isn’t far away …

He's leaving either way so I'd rather take the money in this window rather than trying to replace him in January or going for free next summer. I do wonder if the Rusyn money is coming from this sale though which would explain how long it's taken.

mental how many people seemingly would be quite happy for us to just chuck money around given where we've been over the last 4/5 years. and that's ignoring the fact we simply can't do it because of FFP

Stewart is 27 and he'll be thinking and being told by his agent this is his chance to get a 3/4 year deal on very very good money compared to what he's been on previously. we can't compete with Southampton financially at this moment in time nor should we be trying

he's held out this long so he's not going to change his mind now. given where we are in the window you'd like to think we can eek as much out of them as possible. the whole saga is boring now so i think we'd just be better off getting rid rather than having the distraction of him coming back into the picture

How much are we going fleece out of Southampton then?

People might will think 10 million unrealistic but we know Southampton will have made 200 million from player sales this summer and they've already bought a player for 13 this window so they've got a few bob to spend.

That is far too much faith is speakman and co.
Rusyn will come in, he will be seen as stewarts replacement and they will point out they have purchased 3 strikers and are happy with that

If Stewart leaves unless we can pull a rabbit out of the hat we are weaker
Spot on ,I spoke to the lad who collard him at Kings X and he said Stewart will be away.I banged on about him going to Harley St to get the all clear, but maybe he had already been to Southampton.Think we should tell him he is staying unless a decent bid comes in,because I think we are getting stitched up .A poster has said we wont get much for an injured player,if thats the case why do Saints want him.

Ordinally 3 would be fine if you played 1 up front. However 2 of them have already question marks over then and Rusyn is such an unknown aswell.

They need 2 forwards if stewart goes.
