Tony (TS) McPhee RIP

Saw him with a Groundhogs line up in St Albans a few years back and got the tee shirt. Focus were on the same bill.

Great blues' man . Sadly he hadn't been giging for some time because of a stroke after which he planned making and album called "After the Second Stroke". I don't think that it came to fruition.

If asked how I feel today I will say "Mistreated"

Thanks for the blues and the education Tony.

One of the earliest bands I ever saw... must have been about 1972 at the Newcastle City Hall... Stray and Gentle Giant were on the same bill iirc... everyone got pissed off coz Gentle Giant overplayed and cut the Groundhogs set time! Saw them several more times at the City Hall after that.... turned up at the Half-Moon in Putney many years later (86 ish??) for a gig and met the man there... was very approachable and happy to just have a natter...
Have had Cherry Red going through my skull all morning!! :)

The Groundhogs were very well respected back in the day,had some success but never quite broke through to be major hitters.
He was a fantastic guitarist up there with most.
I remember walking into The Ropery one Sunday night 20 odd years ago with the missus (no) there was a sign up saying playing downstairs Tony TS McPhee, I thought, surely not. So we went down paid a couple of quid in and there he was perched on a stool playing acoustic and singing old blues numbers to about 20 people.

I was at that gig, around Christmas time iirc. Actually went to see Gentle Giant, but the Groundhogs didn't half make an impression on 17 year old me.
