Ultimately they need to hold territory wherever they are or the risk of encirclement comes in and/or partisan actions behind the lines.
Unless Ukraine ultimately surrender Russia need to be able to militarily secure all territory as they progress or they will be susceptible to what happened in Luhansk and Kharkiv where Ukraine attacked their flank, managed to get fire control over their supply lines, starved them out and then counter attacked causing huge Russian men and equipment losses
I'm not sure that you guys understand what's going on in front of your eyes. There is too much talk of territory, strategy, tank battles etc.
There is no need for any sort of sophisticated analysis of this sort. Just two words are needed to describe the current war and Russian tactics - meat grinder. Bakhmut and Soldedar just happen to be the location for this, it could be happening anywhere else on the frontline.
Russia has more men and is simply using artillery and the lives of its own men to kill Ukrainian soldiers. Its crude but having some success as undoubtedly large numbers of Ukrainians soldiers are dying in the grinder. Ukraine desperately needs a way to move away from this sort of engagement. Control of the air, and the ability to take the Russians out from the air and support any tanks on the ground, would seem to be one way. Or more artillery power to keep the Russians at arms length. Himars clearly can't do this at Bakhmut or shells are too expensive. Something needs to change. I think that NATO changing gear to now discuss supplying planes is an acknowledgement of this.
