Russia invading Ukraine (NEWS/UPDATES) - Please put sensitive content behind a spoiler

This is now Nato's war by proxy. Who knows how or where this war will now end. , 😐
I wonder where Sadam got his 1000+ T-72' tanks and air defence missles from? The North Koreans their MIGs and the NVA and Viet Cong their AK47's oh & not forgetting the Cubans their nuclear missiles?

Since 1945 both the Eastern & Western blocks have supplied weapons on a huge scale to just about every one who was engaged in any sort of conflict. The sides that each have supported have always been the ones whoes victory would be to the detriment of the opposing power block.

Nearly every war since the middle of the C20th has been to some degree a proxy war. It's how the game has always been played. Putin may yet suffer the consequences for walking in to what was an entirely avoidable situation & providing NATO with a golden opportunity to basically do what the Rusians themselve have always done when given half the chance.

Just been on the Kyiv Independent site, Russia troop losses given as over 125k, thats insane UK losses in the six years of WW2 were 260,000 KIA. Staggering amount of military kit as well.

They lost more in one WW2 battle than us and the yanks combined European forces in the whole of WW2.

Over 900,000 Soviet troops died at the battle of Kursk

That to me is an utterly staggering stat but also shows the size of the task facing AFU.

Military facilities in Iran have come under attack. Suspected UAVs. One factory and one fuel depot so far.

Israel? America?

Former most likely with tacit approval of the latter. The once covert war between Israel and Iran has been out in the open since Syria allowed Iranian bases near Damascus.

My bad 😊

The Israelis have been itching for a military confrontation with Iran for years.

The latest ultra right wing government just has to get the green light from Washington.

Unfortunately it will likely result in another war in Lebanon, Syria and potentially Iraq too.

Diplomatic blinkers.

Absolutely essential kit for anyone involved in global power plays.

Israel’s window is/has run out. The head of the IAEA who have been monitoring the Iranians nuclear development literally said this week they have enough now to make a number of nuclear weapons.

Iranians already have the missile technology so the only missing piece now is miniaturising a warhead but as it’s 70 year old tech that is pretty well documented.

I’m not in favour of more Middle East wars but the West fucked up here. You can guarantee once they hit the nuke threshold Iran will ramp up provocations and terrorism in the Middle East and there will be nothing Israel can realistically do. Like all nuclear powers once there they act with pretty much impunity, particularly if they are a fundamental theocracy who have their hand on the button.

The key thing will be even if they take Bakhmut whether they can hold it.

There is nothing of value to hold as it’s been decimated but they still need to hold the territory.

If they take it it will be at the cost of huge losses and the only value in taking it is a platform to go further into Donetsk.

It’s the same issue they faced in Kharkiv and Luhansk where they don’t have the numbers to hold their gains and further attack and the people to hold the gains are completely unsuitable for the job. Drunken mercenaries and convicts are not designed for a military policing job.

In Kharkiv and Luhansk they collapsed when trying to hold big swathes of territory and the Ukrainians took back masses of land in a rapid counter attack. They don’t seem to be in any better position in Bakhmut being the losses and who they are relying on.

I don't think it was ever a target to take and hold as such. It's part of Ukraine's defensive line Siversk-Soledar-Bakhmut that it needs to pass on the way to Kramatorsk which is a very important military and strategic hub.

People following the military strategies more closely will know better, but I believe the territory beyond opens up with little to no cover. This might be where the envisaged tank battles are most crucially fought .

Ultimately they need to hold territory wherever they are or the risk of encirclement comes in and/or partisan actions behind the lines.

Unless Ukraine ultimately surrender Russia need to be able to militarily secure all territory as they progress or they will be susceptible to what happened in Luhansk and Kharkiv where Ukraine attacked their flank, managed to get fire control over their supply lines, starved them out and then counter attacked causing huge Russian men and equipment losses

I Challenge you twice that your wrong, your mostly right but not 100%.

Every sovereign nation has the right to defend itself from invasion, and has the right to source the arms needed from abroad if needed, that's all this is at the end of the day. It's fairly simple really, but this simple fact seems to be above your mental capacity. In fact your beloved Russia wouldn't have survived WW2 without foreign arms, funny enough basically from the very same nations that are now supplying Ukraine. Obviously then Russia or USSR were the country being invaded, but the truth doesn't suit your agenda.

Still pisses me right off that Stalin never showed gratitude for the support he got from us and other Allies.
Those brave merchant seamen and RN sailors braved horrendous conditions getting all sorts of equipment to Murmansk and Archangel. Many didn't make it. There should be statues to them in both those ports.

Yes, Russia suffered huge losses, but let's remember Stalin with his paranoia was a major reason for this with his purges of the armed forces, failure to heed the huge amount of info his spies were giving him, and his failure to modernise all armed forces.

How Russia sees him as some kind of hero is totally beyond me.

Where's this been reported ?

When I saw it just Twitter, with video evidence.

It’s now on the Beeb, Reuters, CNN etc’

If you think about it, it’s actually a great way to empty the prisons of what are perceived as the dregs of your society, a drain on public finances. It’s often cited on here as the way we should be treating our own bad lads.
