Tips for small sided games

Been playing again the last 6 months after not playing for years. Keep it on the deck, pass and move, be prepared to run your bollicks off, enjoy the pint after.

Keep the ball. It sounds obvious but don't be scared to pass backwards and start again.

Good teams will have you chasing the ball
The best 5-a-side team I played with did this and I've never managed to get the same mentality across to other teams I've been in. If there is no way forward, pass backwards then run into space.

If the last man back receives the ball has a player closing down on them, drop back further still. That will either draw away an opposition player from ahead of them or give them an option to pass back if needed. Meanwhile the front two make space. The back pass may be sideways across the D which nobody can enter. That creates problems when the attacking player tries to follow the ball and has to run around it.

It is simple stuff, but really effective.

Though I did think this thread was going to be about games when hardly anyone turns up. Occasionally we have ended up with a 5 or sometimes this works with 7 players. Start off with a 3 vs 2, or 4 vs 3 and when someone is on the side with the higher number and they score, they instantly change teams. It gets a bit confusing but gives a decent hour kick about and you don't end up with one team absolutely knackered. Being on a 2 vs 3 is really hard work! Obviously if you are on the side with 2 players and score, it doesn't become 4 vs 1 and remains at 3 vs 2.

It was good crack those games and the ones @supersesh organised. Good times man!

I wasn’t about for the @supersesh games or the @Raich Carter games.

@Mackem00 was very decent though, in fairness so was @watsonuk1 but I was talking to him on the bus the other day and he says he doesn’t get on here any more.

I’d organise a reunion for early next year, but everyone has children/wives/ are over 38 now…

So we can’t drink to excess but we can go out for a meal or something.

If the lads fancy it, happy to do the booking.

Quick edit, evidently some lads don’t post on here any more, if anyone kept their numbers or can remember any more of the lads who played. I’m thinking April

Just for the record, I'm 44 and still regularly drink to excess.

Because of your youthful complexion I still can’t believe you’re 12 years older than I am like.

I still drink to excess too, we’ll find a date, go somewhere, you can fill me in on how I go about this.

And keeping your hairline, which hasn’t gone yet but I’m terrified of losing

Count me in mate!

Haven't seen my old pal @Lurchio in years!

Used to see @watsonuk1 every god damn day but he's probably the one on that list I saw longest ago. Bumped into @Lurchio at The Fire Station last week, says he's not playing now but I bet he'd be up for a game.

My new employer are keen for a game. Haven't played for years so could maybe do with the practice.

I drink to excess too often.
