Leeside Legends: Charlie Hurley, Cork native became a Sunderland hero

WHEN England hosted Ireland in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on May 6, 1957, Charlie Hurley paid in at the gate. A promising centre-half with Millwall in the old Third Division South, he was reckoned by many to be on the verge of an international breakthrough, so he wanted to check out first-hand what the standard was like.

Charlie has to be the first Sunderland player I can consciously remember from going to Roker Park. Stood like a titan, could out jump most center forwards, was nonchalant about how he went about his business. Also I remember when we had to buy an emergency goalkeeper - Sandy McLauglan, who arrived that day and had to survive an onslaught from the opposition and who Charlie gave lots of encouragement to. A great man. Happy birthday Charlie.
