You could score 1000 then get 20 ducks in a row and average more than Malan. Does that mean you’re worth a place in the side?

If we’re picking on averages alone, stokes probably wouldn’t get near any squads. Yet he’s a match winner who contributes when it’s difficult.

Even Stokes himself was talking during the test series about looking beyond base stats and looking at when the runs are made. It’s not much use if you make all your big scores when things are going swimmingly for the team and they’re pissing it anyway, only to go missing whenever the going is tough.

They literally cannot resist the temptation. It’s so annoying and unnecessary as we have a batting attack that is capable of chasing anything when they apply themselves properly

I didn’t say root averaged more. I said root would average more going forward, partly because he’s in the form of his life and partly because Malan is living off one good year when he was introduced.

Today has just proven my point about Malan, as had all this series and I’m sure as will the next 2 games here
