Test squad for Pakistan

You’d imagine the following were certainties (if fit)

Pope, Root, Stokes, Bairstow, Foakes, Leach, Robinson, Potts, Brook

But there are some huge questions still

Openers - stick or take Jennings/other?
Second spinner - Modern or Parkinson? Or both?
Seamers - Broad and Anderson? If not, who else? Wood, Woakes, Archer, Stone all barely played. Sam Curran will be totally ineffective there surely?

Bairstow injured isn’t he?

Jimmy is our best bowler in Asia so he plays alongside Wood ideally as the 2 quicks.

Jennings should be opening also given his record in the subcontinent

I think we can count on a number of those pace bowlers being ineffective in Pakistan (even I've given up on Woakes, by now, in overseas conditions). Re: The openers, they will probably stick with what they have, but I could see the logic in selecting Jennings. Thinking further ahead, I've seen Emilio Gay a couple of times and he looks terrific.

I really don’t think they will drop anyone. They’ve made it clear they are going to be loyal and consistent in selection so I fully expect Lees and Crawley to open in Pakistan, barring injury and possibly Jennings or another surprise selection to go as back up.

Openers - Crawley (i still wouldnt but they will) Jennings (Duckett spare)
Pope (Duckett backup 3)
Root
Brook (maybe Duckett if he scores heavily in warm ups etc)
Stokes C
Foster WK
Wood
Broad (Anderson to swap, though not sure if they will take both if the pitches are flat)
Robinson
Leach

Team dynamic relies on Stokes being fit to bowl and Root getting through a few overs if it spins.

Reserves - Billings Wk, M Parkinson, Duckett, Lawrence, Anderson/Broad, Potts
Not sure they will take 17 players so Billings might miss out if they go with Pope as the reserve WK

If they take 16;

Crawley, Lees, Jennings, Pope, Root, Brook, Stokes, Foakes, Sam Curran, Potts, Anderson, Broad, Leach, Alli, Stone, Robinson perhaps?

Presuming Bairstow and Archer will miss out due to injury?

Broad and his Mrs due to have a baby in November/December iirc so don't think he'll go.

Aye forgot about that. Archer got any chance of being fit? Maybe they'll take a 3rd spinner, Parkinson probably.

Think he's being talked about going with the Lions iirc.

No idea about Archer, but I'd be surprised. Pretty sure they said he won't be back this year. Nasser reckoned the pitches aren't going to be like the ones in India, but slow turgid ones, so pace could be more of a factor than spin. Him and Key were talking yesterday, Key was out there for the Australia series and he made a good point that the likes of Saqlain and Mushtaq Ahmed didn't have amazing records in Pakistan. It was more the likes of Wasim and Waqar, even Shoaib that did the damage so if Wood is fit I expect he could have a big part to play. Possibly Jamie Overton too as already suggested, and Stone as he will already be out there for the T20s.

Lees I think should be dropped. Crawley won’t be after that second innings in the last Test but I have zero faith in him kicking on and getting consistently high scores. Rest of the team picks itself really. Bairstow back in for Brook.
