Football Insider say it's Mowbray.

I'm now embarrassed by that. I was making the same lazy assumptions as many others. I've now actually read up properly. Not sure what Thomasson has tweaked, or whether, after four years, the relationship had run out of steam.
Takes a big man to admit when they’ve fucked up tbh. Hats off.

Probably after finding out his contract wasnt going to be renewed (that's pure speculation, I realise) however he still finished 6 points outside the playoffs. Surely that would be regarded as a successful first season back for us? He had a good season with Blackburn, developed some good youth plays and PL teams (Liverpool, Man City Brighton) trust him with their prospects.

He'd be a steady hand for us which is something we need first season back

When he left he complained he had to work too much. If we are speculating we could say he duffed it off so they wouldn't renew his contract.

But his that the height of the club’s ambition now? It’s ok because he’s not the world’s worst? We should be looking to attract someone really good. Just been listening to some of the Nick Barnes podcast. He says the club will only sign players under 24 . Any player over 24 needs to be a free transfer or out of contract. What a pile of shite
We were never going up this year regardless, it was always about stabilising

Who could we attract really good? The only ones I have seen are largely unproven.

Underwhelming. On record for digs at SAFC thanks to his Boro connections. His CV is a mixed bag, he’s often done well at a club for it to then fizzle out, Boro and Blackburn particularly (though their highest finish under him was last season, arguably an underachievement with players he had). On a more positive note he does know the league, has worked with Corey Evans before and has watched games this season. What a shitshow of a week though. Devastated as with a bit of luck I honestly thought Witt a bit of luck we could have got promoted.
An under achievement to finish 8th, how? I bet Tomasson doesn't finish 8th this season. They have the worst xg in the entire league.

And if the squad was so good, does Mowbray get praise for building it on peanuts?

Blackburn decided to go in a different direction. Not sure why we are going for their past.
Why not someone like Manning who the team can grow with?

Mick Buxton was a safe pair of hands as was Parkinson

Didn’t Blackburn offer him a new deal before he left?

I’m sure I read him saying if they’d offered it earlier he’d have signed it?

Not the most inspiring but I think we’ll be ok with him.

MASSIVE call by Speakman this ! If TM goes tits up the fans will be baying fir his bood.
I'll give him my backing but he certainly doesn't inspire me, going to the match will again feel like a chore (but of course that could all turn again if we are winning, I know that....)
I think that is a key point. Unless Speakman is thick he must realise this will be a totally flat appointment and will lead to people questioning his so-called vision.

Is this the bloke with zero managerial experience who is having a bit of a struggle in the Northern Premier League despite having a full time team and a budget probably the size of the rest of the league put together?
Give the bloke a chance, no other manager knows Sunderland better than him right now

I agree that its not the end of the world, but by the same token McClaren, O'Leary, Megson et al have all achieved more and I imagine this place would self combust if any of them were appointed head coach.

Biggest disaster would have been someone like Ball, Phillips or Dyche.

I just wish we had gone for someone young and with energy to prove themselves as a top coach.
All of them has also achieved more than alex Neil.

Safe pair of hands, plenty of championship experience, likes to give youth a chance. A sensible appointment. There's plenty on here who won't be happy no matter who we got in.

"Going nowhere under this ownership" is absolute bollocks too, we've just been promoted and have the most exciting squad we've had in a long time. We're on the up, but expecting us to push for promotion in our first season back in the championship is mag levels of delusion.
I agree with this, but while I don't expect promotion, I think we could possibly make the playoffs.
