10 teenagers found guilty of murder in Houghton case

Just what I’ve seen on Twitter. There’s a woman helping them campaign against the joint enterprise convictions, her Twitter handle is @Jliffe. She posted a little video from outside and looks like loads of family and friends turned up and were surprised when only one person per family was allowed to go in.

The Britannia pub in Houghton next to where it happened has decided to not even open today so they’re obviously anticipating bother later on.
Looking at that video you can't see many faces so don't know any of the families involved. Saying that I've lived in or around Hetton for most of my life and don't know the vast majority of people these days, especially who the shithouses are around here. All I know is that they appear to be a growing majority. Don't think Hetton's alone in that though.

I don’t get her angle.

The law is clear in that if you are a secondary party that encourages or assists the principal offender then you are guilty of the principal offence. How is that unfair?

Asking the police officer if he knows what joint enterprise is, is like asking a bus driver to explain the intricate workings of the internal combustion engine.

I was just about to say he's a copper, not a lawyer.

Her son was done for joint enterprise as he was one of the group jailed for the murder of Gary Newlove who was beaten to death by a gang of youths in Warrington a few years back.
Dodgey ground this mind. Be loads of people claiming 'I was there but couldn't stop it and didn't touch him'. Hard to prove either way

I can see why joint enterprise exists.

  • A 16-year-old who was 15 at the time to serve at least 11 years after the judge said he was seen for a couple of seconds on mobile phone footage moving towards the brawl with his head concealed by a hood or balaclava, although the youth was not named by any witnesses and did not give any account to police or the court
This statement stood out for me reading the news article with regards to the joint enterprise law
