That to me has been obvious from day one. But they have not bought the club to lavish money as in the Man City and previous Chelsea vanity projects. The clue is in their name which has the word investment in it. An investment is made in the expectation of a return. The PIF buy and sell companies ie investing the wealth of their country. A high profile Premier League club in a modern city will be their public relations and corporate entertainment vehicle to grease the wheels of their investment. Obviously, they want a reasonably successful team on the pitch to use as a base in doing business deals, but I really don't think they are prepared to throw the billions around that is needed for United to realistically compete in the Premier League and Champions League.
