Newcastle have been shortlisted to be the HQ of the new Nationalised Railways operator. Winning it would be a fantastic boon for the region (genuinely not just for Newcastle) and part of the decision making comes down to a vote to assess where has the most public support:

This would bring a lot of high paid jobs to the region and a whole bunch of business. I'm normally anti everything to do with the Newcastle machine but this would be very good.

Newcastle has enough already.
What a load of rubbish. Only them and Stockton in this part of the world actually put a case forward to be the HQ and it would be much better for us if it was in Newcastle rather than York, Doncaster, Derby or Birmingham. It would bring loads of job, lots of business and would make the region a key hub for the rail industry.

I would have thought you might have at least a little bit of insight into these sorts of things.

I think it's absurd that the site for a railway headquarters is treated like a frigging episode of the X Factor. Historically it should be Derby or York.

1) Great British Railways is a stupid name
2) These public competitions for what should be basic government decisions are stupid.

Wasn't Darlington in the running? Or am I getting mixed up.

Reading the FAQ its just going to be a set of meeting rooms and not many staff.

Why on earth is this being decided by public vote though?
Because the Government doesn't govern for the good of the country but breaks down decision making into popularity contests where it can, especially in the north. so they can spin it as some sort of levelling up strategy and as evidence of them listening. It also marries with their, "we don't need experts" agenda, they can ignore the advice of anyone who have studied the logistics and weighed the options.

Might as well be in the north east though as that is how they are deciding it.

how the fuck is something like this put to a public vote? are they that incapable of making an informed decision?
Easy PR exercise I'd guess.

So they can say they gave the power of choice back to the people of the northern powerhouse to choose their grand railway HQ (which in reality and as already mentioned will be about the size of 2 average sized family living rooms with half a dozen staff inside - not even public facing or identifiable from outside as a HQ).
