Irish sports

Anyone into them?

I only ever encounter them when down the Irish pub. They’re not covered at all in any of the media that I watch or listen to.

I quite enjoy the hurling for its viciousness and the Gaelic football just because it is good to watch.

Are either of these sports played anywhere else in the world?

Played elsewhere to a small degree, university teams etc but not significant leagues AFAIK. Aussie rules football is quite similar to Gaelic.

Both the main Irish sports are highly skilled IMO. And still largely based around playing for the county you come from, so a lot of local pride involved. Local clubs are a very big part of community life, especially in rural areas.

Exactly what sport should be IMO.

Knew a wealthy builder helping fund St Gabriel’s (hurling) in London years back. Loads of GAA teams Used to play at Ruislip on Sunday mornings and I went to watch a few times. Madness. Think violent Sunday league football but with still pissed Irish labourers hitting each other with sticks made of ash wood, that’s well over 30 year ago mind. Think loads went home during the Celtic tiger boom. Got took to croke park for all Ireland final. They play the minors final (under 18) before the seniors so there’s 4 sets of fans in the stadium. Great day out. I’d watch it if it was on the tv.

Some of the stadia are quite impressive.

I’m a big fan of football grounds and some of the ones you see on the tele are like pomp 90s English footy grounds with a mix of tall seated stands and terraces behind the goal

Looks like fans go home and away so you get the partisan nature of it too.

Although I’ve never lived in Ireland so just on the outside looking in. Hence the post.

Yes but just because I grew up in an Irish family

Sky sports show the GAA now.

Gaelic football and hurling are great spectator sports and the dedication to their sport is mental given it’s an amateur game.

Currently watching the Armagh v Galway quarter final. Been a cracking game

I'm a big fan of the hurling, and have been to plenty of games with my Irish mates, to watch and support The Deise (Waterford) including quarter & semi finals of the senior All Ireland Hurling Championships, held at Croke Park, in Dublin.

I’m in a pub watching it too

My problem is that I don’t have any knowledge of the sport so don’t know who to support so I tune out of it

Whereas if it’s football and it’s Liverpool v Everton I prefer Everton so will tune in

Ooooh FIGHT!!!!

Everyone hates Armagh.

Absolute pack of shites

That and they beat my team Donegal in the last round

Croake Park is or was the 3rd biggest stadium in Europe.
After Wembley and camp nou I think. Been around it a few times. Impressive with an interesting history
It’s an impressive stadium like.

I went to both England games there when Lansdowne was being rebuilt and went to see Donegal a few times there

Ah right. I always thought it was retained within the design due to its history. Makes for a good story anyway.
Hasn’t always been called hill 16 either.

Can’t remember what it was called but it was after some Army unit in the civil war iirc

Cracking game this and I love the fact they’ve introduced penalty shootouts rather than replays in the all ireland
