Living on £1 per day

We ( 2 adults and young teen) have occasional weeks where we only spend that much but most weeks it’s more like 75 quid and occasionally more like a hundred if a few things run out at the same time.
Some of that will be adding big roll, toothpaste etc..

If you were looking purely on a food basis its very manageable..

Not saying you would have much meat or treats but healthy and sustainable certainly
With the advantage of it being bulked by the number of people.

And being sandwiches and crisps.

It’s absolutely mental that anyone is thinking this is ok
I'm not saying it's ok . I'm saying with being inventive and resourceful you can make food go a long way.. some meals less that 67p allows other meals to be more expensive . Won't be anything exciting but won't be detrimental to your health either.

£1 pushing.. £2. Makes a huge difference

Yeah I went via Ottawa. I stayed there for a few days.

Oh yeah. I've got kids. I'm not going to starve or deprive them. My ex offered to buy me fish and chips when she was getting some for her and my son yesterday but I didn't take her up on it.

Purely just allowing myself £1 per day to buy or produce whatever food I need. I can use whatever is already in the house but nothing new that comes in. If my kids eat anything from the original stuff it's gone.

I'm not really going to count the first week until the normal consumables like bread, butter, milk, cheese etc are gone. I bought a 4 pint carton of milk yesterday, but I won't touch it. I got a one pint carton for myself from the reduced Isle out of my budget and I'll use that.
But your one pound a day doesn’t take into account the luxuries you already have
Standing charge for gas/elec is about 80p/day. That's before even using anything.
Exactly

Could always try grab some of the reduced bargains at the supermarkets on an evening. Some good stuff to be had sometimes

True... Its a bit like the pence aisle idea that I mentioned on another thread 🤔 It's as if less waste of food is a good idea, eat and stay alive I say, however its dressed up.

Cheese slice wrapped around celery, try it 👍 just had it times two, no fuss, does the job, no idea of pricing.
Depends what the job is.

A balanced meal: definitely not (far too few calories, lacking in major food groups).

A cheap snack: OK, but at about 30p for 2, 30% of your £1 daily budget has gone on around than 120 calories. Extrapolated out, you'd be malnourished within weeks.
Personally I only eat twice a day and breakfast / brunch is minor . Depends on energy expenditures ages etc I suppose .
The number of meals doesn't matter, you'd still need to get around 2000 calories a day on £2 whilst balancing the differing food groups - still in the realms of great difficulty.

I think if you're trying to balance your diet /nutrition/ calorie intake daily £2 is hard to do . Having said that I'm always extremely sceptical about set guidelines .
For example , I'm overweight , 64 , fit but overweight . I try to lose weight by limiting calorie to 1600 net . Usually this means 2200 intake and 600 additional exercise expenditure . I don't lose much weight and can even tell I'm bulking up muscle wise .
I think humans are very adaptable to food intake , some total fast days don't go amiss. Some days of high calorific intake can be stored ( and we all know how many calories we can get in if we eat fat such as belly pork or high carb jam etc) . So while I agree the £2 target is difficult I don't think it's as health challenging as you might be feeling . Do it right most days, load up when it's there and don't be frightened to run lean on the odd day might actually be more natural .
Of course kids and pregnant women might need more consistency

I think processed for is more of a problem.

Certainly a major problem. This comes back to the Mogg bint saying "a bag of potatoes costs less than a bag of chips".
Yes it does, but a lot of parents don't have the time to prepare potatoes and make them into chips depending on work and childcare.
It saves them time to put some oven chips in if they have other things which take priority.
It's a vicious circle

and 75p of that was on herb seeds.
I’ve got dozens and dozens of unopened packs of herb and veg seeds (many of them from magazine freebies etc).
If you can use them I’ll happily bung them all in a big Jiffy bag and post them to you if you want to PM me an address.
Might be ‘cheating’ on your £1 a day but if you can use them why not

Most days I typically have

Porridge and a banana for breakfast - 40p
Cheese sandwich, cherry tomatoes and yogurt for lunch - 90p
Spaghetti/Rice with Bolognese/Chile/Chicken Curry for dinner- £1 (assuming cooking for 3)
Apples for snacks - 20p

Total £2.50 not including spices, milk, tea, biscuits etc.

This is one of the things that make this board and the people who frequent it absolutely top class.

No it doesn't but they're disappearing fast and won't last long.

Cheers mate but I'd rather see if I can work it within my budget challenge. I much appreciate the offer though :D

Do you not think the prep time argument is a bit of a cop out though? Everyone has busy lives and let's face it peeling a few potatoes doesn't take long. For that matter they could give them a scrub and make skin on wedges that are far healthier.
Theres a guy that does it on Facebook. Uses apps etc and gets free food using them pretending its his birthday etc
I wouldn't go that far tbf . I'd just always said you can feed yourself quite well and cheaply if you use a bit of imagination. I've been doing it all week and only spent 90p on food.

Very true. I tend to find that despite what we hear on the news etc, most people are kind, generous and compassionate. We just all show it in different ways.

Again you also have to contend with what their kids will eat. For example single parent, or even 2 parents on a low income are trying to look after them, and give them a decent meal will also be looking for the option that will achieve minimal grief I suspect

I've got a 10 year old that will only eat certain things. I know kids can be picky, but like I said it's down to having a bit of imagination with ingredients.
