Cost of food items rocketing

So you don't know
I said in another post a small amount.
The 4 causes of inflation imo are Ukraine, Covid, (the big two) weak pound and national debt. No I can't give a break down of the 9%.
You say it's only Covid and Ukraine can you break what share each of those are to blame ?
Course you can't.

The current issues have little to do with the national debt. Inflation has been caused by decreased supply: the war in Ukraine and the world still waking up from Covid. It's basic economics. The problem is that as prices rise then so do wage demands and inflation becomes cyclical. The least painful lever the government can pull is to keep a lid on wage inflation.

That’s ok then. Nothing to do whatsoever with government policy

Thanks for clearing that up. I still think labour have made the problems worse though, don’t you think?

The ridiculous amount of money the government threw at coronavirus has not helped

How so? I appreciate what you’re saying but where did it go that has caused inflation? Isn’t the lions share of inflation caused by supply chain and energy issues, with a further compounding from the war in Ukraine?

Again I appreciate what you’re saying but I’m yet to see a cogent argument that shows state spending has caused inflation.

I think the public has this naive view that the govt spend money and prices go up, without thinking about the inbetween

I don't have to. It's not me blaming something that isn't responsible for these price increases.
Debt is something we've had for decades. If national debt increases prices then it has been increasing them all my life. So that increase is a constant, it's a normal part of prices and nothing to do with the current stupid increases.

Nobody is claiming debt is the driver for the current level of inflation, it is however a negative factor. As is the weak pound.

But Corbyn(?) Not sure where labour comes into this unless, as you've written, with a small "L".

All the government can do is try to help with the short term pain. Increased wages across public/private sector would just make the problem worse. The money needs to be targeted on those really suffering at the bottom.

Wasting time I feel. They know it’s government to blame which they voted for, but now don’t acknowledge fault

That’s the problem , once they vote and it’s a winner they can’t admit that just maybe they are wrong and the tories have successfully kidded them into giving them their vote

Still eventually they may conclude that Johnson and his cabinet are complete frauds

You don't have to but expected me to.
Is the weak pound a factor?

That will never happen and you know it. Helping people at the bottom a Tory government of this type, don’t make me laugh

This is just a return to the 80s . A few people need to have it drilled into them how a Tory government can ruin lives

@zinedine was on this thread like a flash to claim Ukraine and covid are the main cause of this inflation, rightfully so as well. However his denial that national debt and the weak pound are negative factors is worrying.

The national debt is just noise. It does limit the interventions that the government can make but i can't see any logical connection. I imagine every country in the world has seen its national debt increase so we're likely still at the same comparative level.

He will blame anything on anything but not the government of the last 12 years

Hook, line and sinker he has fallen for it
