Living on £1 per day

I'm not sure what the point of this is? The OP seems to have lots of back-up anyway with existing stock and his allotment. Why not try a more realistic amount like a fiver a day? It's still only 35 quid a week.
He’s explained that his reasons are to replenish his cash savings following a divorce and also as a challenge to see if he can do it.

Yeah, but he isn't a pauper so why just a pound? If he's looking to economise why not face a more realistic challenge of living on ten or twenty quid a day and that will include everything, e.g running a car, buying clothes, etc.

Water isn’t free for a start

Our bill equates to a quid a day, at least

Anyone in a position of authority who thinks families can live on this figure ( or anything near a quid ) clearly has zero concept of the value of money

I'm going to have unlimited supplies of potatoes soon. Just waiting a couple more weeks and they will be a decent size

That would be magic.

I've already said I'm not counting the first week. I've got a tiny bit of butter left and less than a pint of milk. There's no meat in it, half a packet of defrosted prawns and two small blocks of cheese. The rest is veg and condiments.

When I've thought about it people just give you stuff anyway. My leeks were crap last year and some of my mates had loads so I just took theirs if I was making a soup. I've planted loads this year but they won't be ready for months.

Like I said I admire you for trying however its impossible, once you factor in food, gas, electric, water, mobile phone, mortgage etc.

Spending £1 a day fine, living off £1 a day is impossible.

Its basic accounting called prepayments, for example if you spent £70 on food shopping for a week on a Saturday you have effectively paid £10 per day, same with utilities, phone bills, mortgage etc etc

Correct

Can probably skip the cheese . A £3 chicken can do 4 days probably . Roast chicken first day , chicken curry second , chicken fried rice day 3 , turn carcass into stock and make a soup or sauce for a pasta day 4 , could even add the stock to a Dahl and make gram flour chapaties to have with it . One does me and our lass 3 days like that ( she would live on chicken if you let her )

A three quid chicken? f***ing hell man.

Definitely possible, could happily live of toast and butter for a while.
Beans on toast - About 25p.

Soup - 30p

Baked tatie and tuna - 70p

Pasta with sauce - 70p

Ham sandwich - 20p

Can live like a king man. I'm still admonished Marcus Rashford managed to convince the government to spend £20 a week on kids' packed lunches.

I struggle to see how you can do it, a cheap loaf of bread is at least 70p, a tin of smart price beans and sausage is about 50p.
Can get a loaf of bread for half that.

The loaves in Marksies only cost 60p
Nah.

There’s 60p spent. Leaves you 40p and that alone would feed you for the whole day.
Save 40p a day and you can treat yourself to a bottle of Glenlivet from Morrison's at the end of the week.

The real cheap ones are not that nice . I buy cheapish bread for the cricket teas and best I find is about 70-80p.. any cheaper and it's rubbish.. if I can get to a farm foods I can get sunblest for 69p

M&s 60p will be one of them.small loaves

Lidl/Aldi cheapest sliced loaves I think are 49p now

I agree. I can't get away with a lot of the cheap bread, but if you're budgeting for a quid a day....

Although the Marksies 60p bread is a full loaf - dead soft as well

The news is now depressing as fuck on a daily basis. The winter is going to be dire for some.

Just head on the news today there's already concern about the number of turkeys available for Christmas.
Way to increase demand and no doubt prices...
Absolutely mental that we’re normalising poverty in 2022.

How f***ing barmy is that foodbanks are now part of the fabric of the country?

12 years of Tory rule.
I know they were there before or in some shape beforehand, but look at the facts and see the huge increase in them and their need due to Tory rule.

That was surprisingly droll for you. Well done

The reason I've chosen £1 is because I know I've got my allotment as back up and I've argued I could on foodbank threads and don't want to be a hypocrite. If I can't do it with my food growing knowledge I have already, chickens and a forest on my doorstep I'll openly say I was wrong, not that I think anyone should be put in that position.

I really wanted to challenge myself but if I win the Euro Millions tonight it might be short lived.
Indeed but it seems he's doing it for an experiment. One things for sure the OPs signing off takeaway will be the best meal he's ever had.
No mate it was McDonald's with the bairns . The bread and butter diet sounds appealing.
