If true I think it's a sensible announcement

Get him in until the end of the season on league one manager wages. If he doesn't get us promoted then we look at him and other candidates again

On the flip side if he does get us promoted then he can command a championship manager wage and we are better off
You can’t come on here talking sense mate, it just won’t wash.

Maguire maybe. Sunderland fans are f***ing morons though saying it’s a shit appointment and they’d rather have Keane or McCann.

You are comparing a man sacked from Norwich and Preston to Wenger and Mourinho?
No. Did you read the post I replied to? The point I was trying to make? That just because Keane was a great player, he doesn’t automatically make a great manager. I’ve not seen the evidence of that. One good season with us before my eldest was even born. And he became a teenager on Monday!

So, similarly, to quote the post I was replying to, just because Neil was a ‘plodder’ for Accies doesn’t mean he automatically is a terrible manager.

It was always very simple and comes down to Trust. I think with Keane, we would have seen an overt effort to improve transparency and rebuild bridges.... With Neil all we've got is another competent manager who will do as he is told and everything above his pay grade will remain as dubious as f***.
Was Keane always transparent? Do you know anything about Neil or just agenda suiting assumptions?

Keane, clearly. If you check every new manager thread ever on this forum it follows the same pattern. Everyone is horrified at the quite clearly dire appointment (Grayson, Parkinson, Johnson etc) before then convincing themselves they are going to be fantastic. They’re always shite as these people are nobodies, what has Alex Neil ever achieved in football? A lower league Scottish plodder who’s career highlight was playing for Hamilton Academical.

Compare that to one of the best midfielders of his generation who dragged this club from the bottom of the championship. This is just so tinpot and typical of this ownership.
Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger may want to take up this argument.

I was yes because he is a motivational character, whom I think, could motivate the squad, whereas this bloke is as full as dishwater.
it's not true that he has done nothing in a decade. He was assistant at international level and both at Forest and coaching at Villa. His pundit role means he has maintained contacts and is involved with the game.
Neil? Sacked at every job he has had after poor results and was helping out at Crewe! A real go getter!!!
If you just want someone to motivate the squad then give it to Kevin Ball, management is about a bit more than that though. You talk of what Keane’s done since he left Ipswich; lasted 5 month as assistant at Villa, who he left just above the relegation zone, lasted 5 months at Forest and was assistant of an Ireland team which has gone that far backwards over the last decade they aren’t even the best team in Ireland anymore!

Neil hasn’t been sacked at every job he’s had, unlike Keane, who has.

Northern Echo saying short term deal until the end of the season

This us a quote from a Preston fan on that message board.. says it all. Here it is
- I’ll be very interested to see how he does. I really don’t think he’s a great fit for Sunderland, personally. If he found the ownership here frustrating then he’s about to experience something on another level entirely! I also think his obsession with tactics - and his tendency to massively over complicate the game - will be more problematic in League 1 than it was at Championship level. And then his demeanour on the touchline, especially his criticism of players, could damage confidence which is already fragile. His personality isn’t going to give much of a lift to the club either. Of course, he may have learned his lessons from his time here and if Sunderland get the ‘early’ version of Alex Neil then it could yet work. We’ll see soon enough but I just have a feeling his approach to the game is already outdated and there are very good reasons why he’s not landed another gig at this level.

I read a piece from an old Norwich forum which stated Alex Neil is from the same pit village as Bill Shankly. He,of course, was a manager sacked by clubs until he reached Liverpool.
Quite an interesting piece in the penultimate paragraph of this link -

So aside from Keane who turned us down who should we have gone for ?

His experience/ track record is better than most of our recent appointments.
I’m not in charge of appointing a manager, and if i was, I wouldn’t have said we have applications from all over the world and then appoint someone who they could have had weeks / months ago if they thought he was much better than what we had.

 People will convince themselves out is good here man, the same above could have been said for Lee Johnson, that ended well.
Bristol City fans were on here doing LJ down in the days following his appointment. There’s three PNE fans that I’ve noticed on here singing his praises already. Plus the only Norwich fan I know liked him and thought he should’ve have been sacked for his disciplinary stance.

What I would say is we’ve gone out and appointed better than we had. That’s a positive. And had he been appointed before Doncaster I’d not have been surprised if we went up. Might even have accepted it was an appointment that made sense. Attacking manager, pro youth, promotion from championship on his cv.

After the way we’ve been embarrassed by the club over the last week in every single way possible. How can anyone be expected to find any degree of enthusiasm. I just think- whatever
Too much sense in that post for tonight marra.

Righto. I don’t want him to fail, I just find it amazing people are happy about it when literally nee one wanted him before he was all but confirmed. It happens all the time.

All great options to be fair. Personally I've taken a large quantity of a powerful hallucinogen. As a result for the past fortnight I have resided peacefully in the letter rack on the mantel piece having convinced myself I'm this years council tax bill.
I hope you’re in a band that gets help with the energy bills
