Leaving aside the issue of who did the better job for a minute, context is key here. In our current position, Keane coming back is the most exciting appointment that we can realistically make and it's not even close.

Ive said, comparatively to the others I’d take Keane.
I am just a bit worried that people think our most exciting prospect is a man who walked away when he was asked to live closer to where he worked. I totally accept I’m against the majority
 
He will only come if the contract length is 18 months minimum, surely.

They wouldn’t be daft enough to only offer to the end of the season would they?
 
I haven’t commented on this because tbh I thought he wouldn’t take it. He has a cushy number working for tv, a two or three day week making money we can’t match. If he took us on his life would be disrupted big time.
But now it looks as though he might well take it.
If he does take it giving up what he already has, shows how much he wants it and what we mean to him.
I’ve read his books and he does say he has unfinished business…………
Let’s keep our fingers crossed he takes it and the players respond and get us up.

It is different though isn't it? We're fortunate enough (like many on here) to have lived through the Peter Reid years, but since then the Keane reign has been the most exciting time to support the club. That run from bottom to top, keeping us up when we'd previously had two record breakingly bad seasons and some, including myself, started to wonder if we'd ever have another prolonged top flight spell. At a very low ebb, he gave us hope back. So fast forward to now when we're at a much lower ebb, again desperate for some hope, I'm not surprised people are getting excited. Whereas benitez came in, didn't do particularly well and left to make more money.

I'll ask again, what brilliant task did Benitez achieve at the mags?

He didn't achieve any, at all. He got the side he relegated promoted. They easily had the best players in the league. He sold a couple of players and was allowed to spend the proceeds. It was a relatively easy task.

Keane took us from absolute rock bottom to promotion in his first job! Now that is brilliant, amazing.

How can you not see the difference? The mags were simply fawning over his achievements elsewhere, not at their club.

I agree don't think just til the end of the season will suit him

Benitez was lauded as being the resurrection of Jesus Christ himself by them lot up the road, nobody could compare to him. I don't think any of us would say Roy was perfect, but he gets Sunderland, and that's exciting. Looking forward to seeing what happens this time round. One things for certain, it'll not be dull.
