Jermain Defoe (no longer a rumour)

There was no source! You really are giving this journalist far more credit than is due. it was purely his opinion given as fact. There was no new evidence or quotes. it was absolute horseshit. And the fact it was dismissed so quickly proves it. If the two sides are playing hardball against each other and are using the press to try and get a better deal, as you are suggesting (implying that the source was defoe's agent), then surely Johnson would keep quiet about it all and not declare his position to everyone at the very next opportunity he gets. He is interested. He's made that clear. Therefore the article is bullshit. I'm absolutely convinced that what has happened is that Johnson gave a really naive and stupid answer to a question in a press conference, which led to a journalist writing a piece about him not being interested (which is what a lot of other people also GUESSED).

You've just completely made this up with no knowledge

How on earth do you know there is no source?

My take on it is this.

For me it’s a no brainier.
A fresh Defoe in this league will be an unbelievable asset down the back end of the season.

People saying he is demanding this and that will never know until he’s given a go and either proves most people right or proves the negative boring section of our fan base right.

We have been in this league for 3 years now without a thing to get excited about really.
Jermaine Defoe I’d be willing to bet would terrify defences in league 1 coming on for half an hour here or there or starting games with Stewart in a period where we need to throw caution to the wind and win most games to go up.

The lift it would give the fans, players and everyone at the club would be immense, there would be a buzz around the place again and might be enough to gain momentum to get us up.

It might not work.
It might go wrong.
But what is there to lose ????

We aren’t exactly ripping the league apart at the minute !
Roll the fu#*ing dice and see what happens.
I’d rather see Defoe coming on than aiden o bas**rd o brien Man.

Make it happen man

Top post, agree!

You've just completely made this up with no knowledge

How on earth do you know there is no source?
If that is the level we've reached in this then obviously my response is 'how do you know there is a source?'

But the fact is, which you cant deny, is that the article was literally proven as incorrect the day after, by the subject of the article. I dont know how or why you would defend that.

I'm not. How can't you get this basic point. Its only misinformation if his source with Johnson, as that means he lied about what Johnson said.

If his source is a director at Sunderland or Defoe's agent then its not misinformation, it's a good story to print!

I'm not, I'm just explaining how it works as people seem to think just because Johnson says otherwise it means he made it up. He won't have, he will have his source for this, which he could never reveal obviously.

Knowledge comes from my work with them, its not a big deal, just people getting their knickers in a twist here about something that hasn't actually happened.

None of me saying this means I dont think Johnson doesnt want Defoe btw.
You see, there’s the difference.
It doesn’t have to be made up to be wrong. The journalist’s source could be misinformed or out to cause mischief. Lee Johnson might be being economic with the truth. Scott Wilson could have just made it up. It happens, believe me, especially during transfer windows and the close season. Club A needs a player in a certain position. Player Z is either out-of-favour at his current club, coming toward the end of his contract, has played for the manager before, is from the area etc etc etc, so let’s pair them up and create a story. 2+2 doesn’t always make 4.
Because the Defoe deal hadn’t been done, fans were getting their knickers in a twist. There must be a reason. It must be Johnson’s fault. He was asked the question in his press conference on Thursday and simply said it wasn’t straightforward. Why can’t that answer be enough? Why does there have to be more to it?
The latter part of this isn’t directed at you, by the way, just it seemed to flow from the earlier point

I know its unlikely because I work in that industry. You just kicking off because you dont like its contents,

Its really as simple as that, not much more I can say to you.

Yeah I agree but that's the fan's own prerogative like, can believe what they want, shouldnt be influenced by newspapers.

That's not true though is it. Its not black and white.

So just in a hypothetical situation, Defoe's agent told a journalist thats why it might not go ahead. Are you saying he shouldn't write that story?
BTW, The mods are interesting on here considering I got banned for telling someone to go boil their head the other week, that somehow is considered worse
No, I’m not saying he shouldn’t write the story. I’m saying just because somebody has told a journalist their version of events, it doesn’t make it the truth.
If I’m an eye-witness to something and tell a journalist it was a 6ft ginger bloke who did it (I’m mistaken, because it was a girl with blue hair) and that story is printed, it doesn’t make me right.
I’m not sure what the mods and boiling heads has to do with me. I’ve not been abusive to anyone

I totally agree it doesnt mean its the truth like mate for sure, just saying its unlikely he made it up himself.

i know you work in the industry, and i know that's what's making you blindly loyal. And wrong. You're wrong about me not liking the content of the article btw. I understand completely how Johnson's response in the press conference a couple days ago could be interpreted as being not keen on Defoe. It definitely looked that way. But, it's since been proven without a doubt to be untrue. Are you genuinely trying to tell me that journalists never lie? come on man.

I'm not wrong, you are. Simple as that.

Night.

I’m not saying he has. I’m saying it happens. I’ve worked in newspapers for 30 years, I know. That’s why I asked about your knowledge of the industry and that newspaper in particular.
The point I’m trying to make - and I really thought I had quite clearly - is that just because source has told the journalist that Johnson is the stumbling block, it doesn’t mean that’s correct.
You’ll know yourself, off-the-record briefings or leaks go on in all walks of life, and they’re almost always driven by an agenda. There might be one here. There might not. The source could have misinterpreted some words and passed them on in good faith as fact. The story could be educated-guessing.
I’ll let you crack on with your work. I’ve got some Defoe highlights to watch

I know mate! I totally agree and that's what I am trying to saying

Enjoy!

If Defoe fails to score after the first few games, the usual suspects will be on here blaming LJ for it.

Bloke behind me today blamed Johnson around a dozen times in the first half. Stuff like 'this is shite Johnson', 'Sort it out Johnson'. 'you don't have a clue Johnson'. I was very tempted to turn around and cup my ears at him after the goal. He had blamed Johnson for every mistake in the first half yet strangely did not give LJ any credit at all for the winning goal. I assume if hes responsible for a mis placed pass then he is also responsible for the winning goal? or maybe not............
A small section of our fan base are utterly clueless and embarrassing.
