Going for a walk

15.8 mile done today. Wheatley Hill to Hart Station (Hartlepool) return via Shotton, Wingate, Castle Eden, Hesleden, Monk Hesleden, Crimdon Dene and Hart Station (then back again). Up to 86 mile for the year, keen to get early miles in for 1000 target. Foot currently behaving well. Enjoyed that

Did Pen-y-Ghent via plover hill yesterday, 12 mile loop. Something down the ride side of my shin is giving me jip today like keeps making me take the weight off it.
That's a great route, did it many years ago in deep snow. Might have to have another go at it.

It’s canny mate, got talking to some bloke who was going up as we were coming down with a massive back pack on, my mate assumed he was doing the 3 peaks will all the weight he had on his back. Turns out he was walking up to paraglide off, we watched him floating above us as we were driving home the mad bastard.

You should try it 🙂👍

Cracking walk that Gordon 👍

It's a lovely route and as it was midweek not many people about. The walkway itself runs from Hart Station in Hartlepool and whilst it's called "Haswell to Hart walkway" the line then continues on up to Ryhope via South Hetton, Murton and Seaton. I know a lot of cyclists head down from Ryhope sometimes cut off at Wingate and head down the lines and go to Thorpe Thewles. All great walks

Credit where it's due, the weather over the last 10 days or so, has been cracking weather for walking or cycling. As it should be at this time of year, cold starts and sunshine, clear skies and full moons. Probably helped a few people suffering from the January blues. Nowt worse than being cooked up indoors or out walking in the cold and rain at this time of year. Mind you I've found February is generally the worst month of the year these days, wet and a graveyard for football postponements.

Walked that from Ryhope to Hartlepool a few times. Lush, especially in the summer, until you actually get to Hartlepool. Always someone there having a barney about their giro.

Although last time I went along there through Shotton the embankments were chokka with fly-tipped shite.

Pint or two in the Rat Race and then train back to Sunderland. 👍

Yeah the Shotton stretch is depressing with all the dumped shite either side in the ditches, really is poor. Apart from that it's a lovely stretch.

I think I'll put that walk on my "to do" list as I know the route and transport pick up wouldn't be overly difficult. About 17 miles looking at a few gpx files I've linked together. Ryhope to Shotton Thornley Crossings 8.7 mile then about 8 mile to Hart Station.

Also the option of the coastal walk from Sunderland down to Hartlepool (Headland) as well.
Walked from Chester to Tynemouth few days ago, via the ferry, 30 miles, completely carried away.

few pints of Guinness as a reward at the end.

Nice way to spend a day

jesus christ that's a good walk

After years of walking/running in the countryside I have discovered urban hiking.. its.great .. no need to take food or water as always near a shop or cafe ..no need for tent or sleeping bag on overnighter just find a cheap b&b.. done West London.. Birmingham. Hope to do Edinburgh in May.. it will never beat a country.walk but makes.a nice change

That's a canny walk, 20 miles or so, did it once myself. Personally I think the only nice bit is the stretch between Castle Eden and Hart Station, the rest is pretty grim, especially the Shotton section. Lacking decent pubs en route as well, save for the Castle Eden Inn and pubs at Seaton.

That was last summer I think. Needs sorting out. It's a gorgeous walk when it's clean.

Some of it is a bit bare but I love it myself. Found the Blue House at Haswell to be canny. You can also take a more coastal route which is maybe longer / less paved but certainly easier on the eye. The inland path gives decent shelter from the elements.
