Energy Prices - are they taking the piss???

When I worked at Utilitywise, we used to send customers a little book of 'energy saving tips'. One of them recommended that they clean their windows regularly to increase daylight, reducing the likelihood of turning the lights on.

Lets face it, the only energy advice that's going to make a meaningful reduction on bills is either fiddle your meter or stop in the pub all day and night using theirs.

I was at Utilitywise for 4 years and I remember that very booklet! 😂

Were you at the South Shields building before they moved to Cobalt?

I did mate, loved it at South Shields, hated it at Cobalt.

And if thats you in your avatar I was drinking with you in hospitality at the SoL courtesy of another broker at the Plymouth home game a few years ago.

Ah yes I remember! Believe it or not my avatar photo was actually taken that very day!

Hope you’re well mate! You out of the industry now?

Cracking day out, great to meet you both. I had to sign the bar bill even though I had no affiliation with the company, because everyone else had left. £330 we ran up between us! They haven't invited me back since.

I'm still in the energy industry, but I'm in a technical role with a distribution company. I wasn't ruthless enough for B2B sales.

You too mate! Aye we definitely took full advantage of the hospitality didn’t we! 😂

Yea I’ve diversified now as well. Still with a brokerage but moved away from the direct sales side. My cold calling days thankfully also well and truly over!

Good on you. If I had to do that until retirement age, I would've had a chest grabber before I got there.

I take it you aren't with the broker who hosted us that day?

Likewise mate it’s certainly not for the faint hearted!

And no I ended up leaving not long after that match believe it or not. Happy and settled where I am now though thankfully!

Of course, that makes sense. Seems I've completely miss understood it! Anyway @Phantom of mobs the general advice is in most circumstances is to move onto the default tariff.
The price fix/ capped prices are the standing charge and price per unit they’re fixed but depends on usage
I will be doing so mate, their fixed rates are astronomical... cant see anyone fixing in the near future.
What’s your annual usage of you don’t mind me asking

My parents in their 80s got a bit of a shock. They were paying £110 per month with Octopus and their new contract is £276 per month. Apparently this is reduced from £342 due to being a loyal customer  I'm with them also and currently pay £105 per month with my contract due to run out in April.

And here it is in numbers (I'm sorry)...

For someone on TYPICAL USE (use more it'll be higher, less lower) then here are the gas & electricity prices...

Cheapest fix 1yr-ish ago: c. £900/yr
Current price cap: £1,277/yr
Strongly predicted 1 Apr cap: c.£1,925/yr
Crystal ball predicted 1 Oct cap c. £2,240/yr
Current cheapest fix: £2,250/yr
