I remain unconvinced and unlike (I suspect) you and many others I have worked with PIF and understand the Saudi mentality.

They may have pivoted but nothing to date suggests to me that they will be throwing money around. The first signing will be very telling.

Trippier may come but he is 31, a northern lad (bury), worked with Howe for one season at Burnley, has a five year old and a two year old who the likely see going to some private school in Cheshire. Man Utd would be perfect but he will make do with 4 years at the mags on 150k p/w.

Who is he trying to convince? It must be really enjoyable watching your team concede 11 goals in the last 3 games.
They painted themselves into so much of a corner with everything being Ashley and, latterly, Bruce's fault, they now have to pretend its more enjoyable and looking rosier.

Ashworth has a good reputation. He did a good job with England and has done well at Brighton. That being said, these sorts of appointments are tough - and particularly difficult to track on previous performance. Everton poached the successful Leicester structure and it was a disaster. And I keep coming back to NUFC - both the new ownership and the fanbase in general - being completely ill-suited for the sort of gradual root and branch slow rebuild that they actually need. Trying to sign the likes of Kieran Trippier with a relegation release clause suggests that they won't be able to keep themselves in check.

He can go to West Ham and get £80k a week over say 3 years so that's another £12.5m in his coffers and more from possible bonuses given their European exploits. Or he could come up to the Mags who have to pay a premium so say £100k which is £15.5m over the 3 years. He'd be about £3m better off, so less than £2m after tax over 3 years.

This is the point I'm making, even if he's 'greedy' he doesn't need that extra sub £2m on top of his multi millions, especially when you look at what he'd have to give up and risk to get it then I'm pretty sure he'd say fuck that :lol:

I’ve always thought that. What can you do on 50k a week that you can’t do on 40k a week?…

But greed is a very strange thing. It’s an addiction really.

There are so many football players who have made backwards move career / ambition / glory wise for an extra few quid - I’m always left thinking “why the fuck?”
