Mensi of The Upstarts - RIP

Had both jabs and still had covid. Just heard about this an hour ago. A relative was a promoter for toy dolls and angelic upstarts. I met olga a few times and mensi, pete zulu etc. Police Oppression still relevant now as well as the anti racism and fuck EDL stance. RIP MENSI

He was a half decent music writer to be fair - took the piss mercilessly out of Mensi and did the same with the Cockney Rejects. He was the early champion of Oi as a sub genre of Punk and was responsible for a few compilation albums promoting it which always prominently featured the Upstarts

A lot of journos used the music press as a springboard to the Nationals in those days - Parsons, Burchill, Baker - Bushell just went in a different direction as not many went to the right wing press like he did
Strange that all of those journos you mention have been involved in controversies around right wing opinions.

Never took to the Upstarts as much as your average punk lads fan, but England, Two Million Voices and I Won't Pay for Liberty are belters.

Tremendous respect for Mensi and everything he achieved for himself, his band and his city. A sad loss, rest in peace.

First band I saw. Bolingbroke Hall in South Shields.
Bollingbroke Hall my first Upstarts gig.
Remember the old miner on stage with the pigs trotters in his hand giving a speech.
Fcukin covered in spit.
Talked to Mensi around 10yr ago regarding that gig.
Last I saw them was a place the south side of river with the Damned. Liddle Towers gr daughter on stage.
The Upstarts were a true ground breaker for all us kids back then & those left alive today.............
RIP Mensi

They played at the punk festival at Durham student union must say that day was an experience, was working on the security about ten years ago, was some head cases in

Rest in peace mate, I'll never forget Norwich away, what a day that was.

He used to occasionally travel to away games with the Iron Horse bus most of time with his Westoe Pit mate Geordie C.
One Norwich game the bus stayed down there until the night club kicked out.
Samson and Delilahs ironically enough.

Mentioned earlier in the thread my mate has been drumming for the Upstarts so I've seen them a couple of times in the last few year. Great at Independent but they played a cracking gig at Newcastle Riverside not long after and he was topper. Sad news, he'll be a big loss to many people.
Johnny?
