Had both jabs and still had covid. Just heard about this an hour ago. A relative was a promoter for toy dolls and angelic upstarts. I met olga a few times and mensi, pete zulu etc. Police Oppression still relevant now as well as the anti racism and fuck EDL stance. RIP MENSI

Where does the time go.

.saw them play their first gig in Jarrow....was working at the Shields Gazette's Jarrow office and got a call from their manager..Keith Bell, 'inviting' me to come and review them. Anyone who knew Bell, back in those days, can understand why i went. Suppose it must have been late 76 early 77...

(Oh and they were great, of course)

Jarrow Civic Hall ?

Aye O2 got hit with bottle cos he had his lads top on, offered whoever done it to come on stage to sort it out , but there were no takers, massive lads fan and huge character RIP
Aye, was there that night, shite behaviour. Bad cut by all accounts, came back out for a while but had to go off.

Can’t remember that, was Bushell always a right wing prick? Intelligent bloke but sold out writing shit for The Sun.
He was a half decent music writer to be fair - took the piss mercilessly out of Mensi and did the same with the Cockney Rejects. He was the early champion of Oi as a sub genre of Punk and was responsible for a few compilation albums promoting it which always prominently featured the Upstarts

A lot of journos used the music press as a springboard to the Nationals in those days - Parsons, Burchill, Baker - Bushell just went in a different direction as not many went to the right wing press like he did

Mensi was well in with WHU fans way before 82. I personally saw him in the Roker End with the West Ham boys around 1980. So I can't imagine him chasing them in 82.
In fact, there's quite a few of the old timers who wouldn't give him the time of day because of his alliance's with WHU.
Might have been Arsenal then

Paul Morley, Charles Shaa-Murray (sp?) and Danny Baker all around the same vintage as well.
