Mensi of The Upstarts - RIP

Would love to hear Solidarity or I'm An Upstart at the SOL pre or post match tomorrow. Not that effin' crap Ibiza rave shite that Methven has obviously insisted remains prominant in the play list. It is bloody awful and everything that is wrong with moderon football and people like CM. Tom embodied what SAFC and Sunderland has always been about .

Does anyone have the contact to make this happen. Either song would be stirring.
Imagine Im an Upstart as the new entrance tune ffs!!
Opposition would run back to their dressing room! 🤣

Saw the Upstarts a couple of times, in London and Leeds. My abiding memory of him though, around 1982 at Roker Park, dressed in a garish Sergio Tacchini tracksuit ( at the time football casual fashion hadn't hit the streets of Sunderland) chasing 4 or 5 West Ham down the road behind the Clock Stand, they just managed to get to the away turnstile in the nick of time, before Mensi could lay a glove on them.
Mensi was well in with WHU fans way before 82. I personally saw him in the Roker End with the West Ham boys around 1980. So I can't imagine him chasing them in 82.
In fact, there's quite a few of the old timers who wouldn't give him the time of day because of his alliance's with WHU.

Met him and the guitarist years ago at a show at Gypsy Green stadium. It was heavy metal affair, and I knew one of the bands (FIST) He came over to speak and gave me a playful clip on the ear when he found out I was a Newcastle supporter. I didn't know who he was like, but he was sound as a pound. RIP Mensi.

Mentioned earlier in the thread my mate has been drumming for the Upstarts so I've seen them a couple of times in the last few year. Great at Independent but they played a cracking gig at Newcastle Riverside not long after and he was topper. Sad news, he'll be a big loss to many people.

I have two vivid memories of Mensi. One was kicking the pigs head with the policeman's helmet around the Old 29 when they were singing either Police Oppression or Who Killed Liddle. The other was him wearing a white boiler suit and casually bowling a Blackpool fan down the Roker End. Strange times.

He never wavered in his approach, RIP.

I was living in London in the 80s when we played Chelsea when there was absolute hell on, the cup game. I was in a wine bar (aye) full of Chelsea and the Sunderland buses were coming past at walking pace due to the traffic, the bar emptied and they attacked the buses. The Chelsea lads were opening the back doors and throwing bricks in. One of the buses suddenly stopped and the Sunderland lads piled out the front - led by Mensi.
