Energy suppliers going bust

I was paying £100 a month with my old supplier and British Gas told me this would go up to 150 a month. Just had my first DD and they’ve taken 220!
I’ve just messaged them and asked for the 70 back or I’ll be sending them the bills for any unpaid DDs as a result. Cheeky fuckers.!

The absolute kernts have done the same with me, so obviously not an isolated incident. They tell me the DD will be £135 then set it up for £213, then advise I’ll have overpaid by the best part of £900 come the end of the year… no f**king s**t, Sherlock. There’s an option to change the DD amount based on your previous usage which I did, and they then tell me I’ll have underpaid come the end of the year, so need to increase it. Too late to avoid paying the £213, which is coming out tomorrow. This sort of practice is a disgrace, I can afford the extra (only just)
but there are families living hand to mouth that clearly couldn’t take this sort of financial hit, even for 1 month.

Having been with BG years ago and being f**ked around royally by them, I’m chuffed to have to endure their incompetence again.

I know. But seriously 220 a month? I’m never in.
I’d love to know where they get their estimates from. I’m only using gas or leccy 7 hours a day and my thermostat never goes above 19.
Have you submitted any meter readings, it’s worth doing this but it won’t be a quick fix to get the money back until this has been verified.

Bastards, the lot of them.

Aye, they estimated mine, electric 11'920 pa, actual last year 5810 pa. Gas 17'259 pa, actual 13'370.
Their estimate would have been £273.60 a month I was paying £105
After 3 or 4 times trying to contact them, I went on the chat thing told the lass I wouldn't set up a direct debit until they changed it, she asked me in the end how much I wanted to pay, settled on £159 month (my calculations) absolute nightmare, I was told they would be.

Anyone got a refund of money owed from one of these companies that have went bust? I'm owed £41 from July (I moved from them then they went bust) from Avro, £236 from September from PFP, fortunately I'm not waiting for it but what if I was one of these unfortunate people who needed it.

I’ve just had an argument with someone from Shell. Moved from Green with £121 worth of credit. I usually pay £48 a month and gets me a good bit of credit (I know this is pennies compared to some but I live by myself in a two bed house) and they’ve put it up to £122 a month. More than double.
Have to wait until they fix their problems with the bills being published before they will change.

It is shocking and regardless of whether you live by yourself, on low or high income, need the money or not what is going on at present it scandalous to say the least.

They create an open market and put legislation in place to facilitate the changing of providers really easily and people budget accordingly and now we have gone back to creating this monopoly as a result of the shoddy industry practices and lack of action by the government on tackling energy prices.

Never apologise for your situation, it’s unacceptable.

I think you can lower your DD again but you need to make sure it’s in line with the price increases which all of us have felt. Which incidentally doesn’t seem to be massive with Bulb (my current provider).

Your money will be moved to your new supplier in the form of credit. Sadly it will more than likely be wiped out and kept by your new supplier, at least thats what happened to me. Half (£88) was kept to settle old bill to igloo who went bust, even though iv never had a settlement bill from igloo. The other half went to eon next, which was instantly took off an almost £300 bill they have give me after i submitted a meter reading. Iv had no breakdown bill off eon, just an amount i owe them apparently for usage since the changeover.

The whole thing stinks. Lack of communication a big problem. Soon as i get a breakdown bill il be going through it with a fine tooth comb.

Good post. To be honest I’m well prepared to pay more than I am now, after all everyone has seen increases. It’s just how much they put it up.

That electric estimate is utterly mental, sure the average for a 3 bed house is about 4500kwh per year.
