HMRC - newcastle city centre

Seems mad building a new gaff when a lot of this admin type work can be done from home seems like as waste of money especially when half the current Gmtv buildings in the north east are under used

You couldn’t make it up.
From a tax haven in the British Virgin Islands
HMRC

The arrangement currently in place is something similar.

Doesn't really mean anything though. Believe me, any respective tax affairs will have been scrutinised heavily in order to ensure they are paying the right amount in the UK.

I think to look at this from a balanced view this move is a good move for Newcastle but bad for the areas of the north east losing jobs. I know people will say they’re being relocated but what usually happens is people take early retirement or leave the civil service in those areas rather than relocate. I think they call it natural wastage. The tories have always been a party of centralisation but they should understand in levelling up shouldn’t be about moving jobs from around the north east because those areas ultimately lose out. Wearside is losing out here along with peterlee and Stockton. The government should be looking to address this with unemployment high in these areas, but we’ll get crumbs as usual

The north east itself needs levelling up also!
Eh? If you work in Washington you can work in Newcastle? More of problem for Peterlee & the south of the region but not Washington. Even with Peterlee, the Government have just opened a train station at Horden if you wanted to commute.

Well apart from people who live close by to those offices who may have forged a career in the civil service will be given the option of extra commuting or to leave. Whichever way you look at people will have more commuting time each day. Also business rates each of the councils would have received from the HMRC offices in their boundaries will be lost. And remember these aren’t new jobs, it not a net gain of jobs for the north east, they’re just centralising existing jobs. It’s more smoke and mirrors. Certain areas of the north east are losing out in this……

Christ

I moved to Newcastle from Hartlepool as there was nowt there and jobs were poor. It’s your choice. Stay where you are and commute, find a new job on your doorstep or leave. Don’t piss and moan because the jobs don’t come to you. Laziness.

And why isn’t there anything in Hartlepool? well I guess it’s whatever your definition of wanting the whole north east to do well or you’re happy watching your north east neighbours losing income. Remember these are existing jobs being lost around the region

It does. It just didn’t suit where my life was going. I didn’t fancy what was on offer and went elsewhere. Shit happens. I won’t moan about it.

Anyone working in Washington can work in Newcastle. I’m not sure that we can base office locations on the desires of Sandra at Teal Farm and her dislike of buses. 😂

Imagine you’ve worked for HMRC all your life, and you live somewhere like Stockton or Peterlee and they first tell all of a sudden you’ve got an extra two plus hours a day commute because they’re closing offices. Is that going to be viable? On top of this places lose the business rates after the offices close.
The north east is losing out in this relocation

If I lived in Peterlee and was given the option to move to Newcastle I’d be f***ing ecstatic. I am from Peterlee so know all too well the options available.
I think the move is to save money for the HMRC, but there was always going to be places around the north east missing out as a result
Tough shit. Some folk will have to get the bus.

It’s not just having the jobs on the door step, places around the north east will lose out from the loss of business rates…..but as you say tough shit to the rest of the north east

It isn’t though. People can travel. If they aren’t willing then they will have to look elsewhere. That’s life I’m afraid.
