Looking at the bigger picture, the mags and their owners are likely to be able to tough this one out.

Global arms sales will surely continue to rise as key execs and former execs take places in US government.

The ability of BAE to influence decisions made by UK Gov is not going to abate and every region of the UK has some company reliant on their deep pockets.

The PR disaster that is the Yemeni crisis will be seen by more and more UK citizens in the run upto Christmas as the charities and NGOs flood our TV screens with images of carnage and despair, but with Houthi militants aligned with Iran there will be a bit of spin.

War is hell and that hasn't changed in millennia but the profits of Western companies and the value of our pensions is expected to rise not fall.

The Ruben's will know all about the financial markets and will have performed a risk analysis on their investment. Staveley is part of the Saudi family. The Saudi royals just want good PR.

Whether they get it or not is down to the ordinary people and depends on their ability to resist any influence but unfortunately, even though many deplore the massacre in Yemen (me included), its not going to stop any time soon.
I think your cynicism is well-founded, but looking at it from another angle - the Saudi regime has always been odious, but has there been a time in recent memory when they were so widely reviled by the wider Western public? It's now pretty much an open secret they were up to their eyeballs in 9/11, and MBS is a Gaddafi/Saddam-level pariah in the eyes of the public at large. There's a reckoning coming for them if the Western world moves away from energy dependence on them.

I'm not arguing there shouldn't be a reckoning, just there is unlikely to be one.

They're part of the fabric of Western economies and, rightly or wrongly, aligned against Iran

They're sportswashing to improve the publics view of them.

It's not a short term project.

Aaaah but they’re shrugging it off as the rantings of sad Irish mackem bastard. Does anyone know why he supports us anyway?
Same as they write off anything that doesn’t portray them as being the bestest at everything, anywhere, ever. It doesn’t really bother me that much what they say any more mate. It’s put out there by mags for mags and seldom has more than a passing acquaintance with the truth. Whatever they do say is just a target to be shot down. And with their reaction to this takeover they’ve left themselves defenceless.

United with Pride have gone whinging to the BBC.

Gone for a combination of “we don’t have a say” and “we’d rather work with them”. Also managed to work in some of the recent narrative on social media abuse as well, good effort:

“the narrative has been hijacked by some people”

“social media pile-on”

“been quite a difficult time for us as volunteers, and mental health has become a really challenging situation”

“We have zero influence on who owns Newcastle United Football Club”

“difficult to see where the value is in helping LGBT people in Saudi Arabia by attacking football fans here who just want to go to a game”

"If you want to improve the conditions for people in Saudi Arabia, talk to Amnesty International, talk to the Saudi consulate, talk to the UK government”

Ive never seen a more pathetic group than this lot.
Classic DARVO - "Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim and Offender."

I’m not on Twitter so all I see from him is what’s been linked on here. He’s impressive mind. He’s been like a terrier with a rat throughout this. One of a few relative to the size of the issue. Fair play to the man.
Him and Jonathan WIlson on the guardian podcast always have a dig, not even slying
Called them the bonesaw billionaires last week
Not sure what Martin Samuels & Ollie Holt from the Mails agenda is but again there's nothing complimentary about what they write about the school bus bombers XI in the Mail

Saudi Arabia has always been a dictatorship but traditionally run as a collective family affair.

Since MBS became Crown Prince it has been moving slowly towards a one man tyranny with even royals that stand in his way been pushed aside, even though his dad is still nominally King.

When King Salman (85) finally dies it will be interesting to see how far MBS goes to punish any high level rivals to his power and if he will even try to be subtle about it. Business as usual or Saddam type bloodbath ?

It’s the new “net spend” argument 😂

Disney, Formula 1, Teeside, Petrol...tick, tick, tick, tick!

SABIC not PIF invested in Teeside and if they could have got a better plant, with better trained employees cheaper elsewhere they would have done. Likewise Rueben - he is in for a profit he is not some benevolent billionaire.

This is the perfect opportunity to let them know how well regarded they aren’t.

The sportswashing is only successful if it’s allowed to be. If we sit silent like they would like us to then it will work.
Gerrin. Play it up.
Gan on lass.
I have my doubts about this “independent regulator” Considering the evasiveness of Crouch, I now have even more.

He'll move to Barcelona or Real (for the money and prestige plus the chance to win European Cup)

City or Chelsea (more or less as above and if he doesn't mind being kicked).

They're the only ones who'll be able to match his ridiculous wage demands at present.

The Marx brothers outfit won't be able to afford him for 5 years - and that's assuming they stay in the division this year!
