A690/Doxford international roundabout

The traffic light timings have been changed travelling from town to the roundabout. Only 4/5 vehicles get through when lights are on green. Traffic builds up quite heavily back towards East Herrington. Any ideas why this has been done? Seems totally unnecessary to me.

It'll be backing up on all routes but with the traffic lights, it'll let vehicles through from every section in turn so no one route get more blocked than another.

Noticed last Tuesday coming from Houghton way the lights onto the roundabout were only on green for a really short amount of time. Like you say, 3 or 4 cars getting through at a time. Went through yesterday and they were back to normal again.

Sadly not. It runs on a timetable, even late in the evening. I noticed the same as the OP on Sunday when heading off to the Lumiere. One advantage coming from the South is you can now get all the way around the roundabout without stopping. A case of swings & roundabouts.

Interesting. Surely that's how they're meant to work as I suggested?

Local councillor Dominic McDonaghue (Dinnar how to spell it) worked with the council to sort out the sequencing issue which was causing tailbacks after complaints from local residents. Assume it never worked or hasn’t yet been changed.

Some traffic lights work on a timetable during peak hours and then fall back to something called VA or MOVA which flicks the lights to accommodate approaching vehicles (some just always run like that). There's also something called SCOOT that tweaks the red/green cycle in order to give priority to a particularly busy approach. I'm pretty certain the lights on this roundabout are just timetabled as it's frustrating as hell being sat there waiting yonks when there's noting happening. It doesn't mean it's totally rigid; it might use a different set of phases at different times of the day but it's still non-reactive.

I think it’s one of them that is controlled by traffic lights all the time. Fair enough at rush hour but absolutely no need at other times, you find yourself just feckin sittin there with no traffic coming wasting your time.

There’s a roundabout near me with 24/7 timed lights. I can sit there at a red light between 7pm and 6am with no one else using the roundabout. Crackers.

Last monday it was quicker to get to houghton going via doxford park, along past burdon then the houghton golf club and drop down into houghton itself. The traffic was queuing from the jet garage - ridiculous.

What would he know about traffic light sequences
Complain to the council and regional traffic light management service that I think is run by Newcastle council
And they are trying to reduce emissions
Traffic lights outside of rush hour are totally unnecessary

Seemed back to normal when I went that way last night ^^^^.

White Mare Pool roundabout works better with less queuing when the lights aren’t working , now there’s a novel idea , switch the damn things off and let a roundabout work as it should.

The lights on the A1231 roundabout on the A19 were faulty a few years ago , took nearly twenty minutes to get through , so frustrating when you’re sat in a queue and watching virtually no traffic coming from the right. It was a Bloody Sunday afternoon !

I assume you didn’t sit there for twenty minutes and just ran the red when it was safe to do so?

I noticed earlier in the week it was backlogged from the A690 A19 roundabout down to the board inn. The queue went along silksworth rd to the entrance to Long Meadows. I couldn't see how far it went up the Durham rd towards at Chad's.

The lights at the Toll bar work better when switched off. There's always queues there, at times you look and every junction is stationary. One Saturday they weren't working and I drove through them twice. Both times I was barely delayed as drivers gave way and used common sense. The traffic flowed better than any other time I've driven through there.
