HMRC - newcastle city centre

The bottom line is Newcastle is the main city in the North east. It’s just a fact.

Transport links, media, sport, culture, development are all high profile and focussed around Newcastle.

It’s obvious a new major development would stay in Newcastle.

Should it though?

With big populated areas all around it.. plenty room to spread out

It was my understanding that HMRC were moving out of Benton Park View and the DWP were replacing them.
No, as I commented, the Civil Service is being turfed out to make way for a housing estate.

As said, they sold the land to fund refurbishment, leased it back and now new land owner has decided housing is a bigger earner.

We've been categorically told that.

Who is 'they' who sold the land to fund refurbishment?

I didn't think the CS ever owned Benton Park View?
The government owned all government buildings. It flogged them off at the beginning of the century to make a few quid and then rent them back on long-ish term deals at relatively cheap rates. Those deals are starting to end now and market rates are kicking in. Hence why they’re all moving to shiny new offices on long-ish term deals at relatively cheap etc etc etc.

I was thinking more recently, really, but I take your point.

They had it when the old building was still there.

See West Winger's comments.

It's actually more conducive to productivity to work in the office for me at least. But it's a bugger of a commute.
Yeah, but that must be over 25 years ago now? Your post seemed to imply that the CS had just sold the land recently.

Apologies for that.

I knew the sale was a good time ago, in exchange for the buildings being made all nice, shiney and tarty.

My boss gave me the gen but not the full timescales. She's been there a while as she remembers "the longest corridor in Europe" in the old buildings.

Unfortunately this is the truth.
Probably been the case since the Romans.

If we want to improve Sunderland, we need to rethink the city centre. Retail is a fraction of what it once was and will only get smaller. We need to stop trying to bring back the past. Moving the college was a good step, but we missed a massive opportunity when they built the new Uni next to the river. We should try to move the people who will always be there into the city. Council/Goverment workers and students. That gives a base for footfall which will support hospitality and then build up from there.

However, we're never going to get 9k workers who are based in Longbenton to make a move to a different city.
Remember that many of the 9000 have been forced to Longbenton. Not all of them will have started their careers there that's for sure.

I find this absolute horse shit

Theres no need at all for it to be in the self proclaimed Capitol of the NE.

If it was that important why stop at Newcastle? Move it to a much bigger city to say Leeds, Manchester or Glasgow. Or an even Birmingham, the UK's 2nd largest. Why stop there, just put it in London.

Might aswell move DVLA out of Swansea and move it to Cardiff if it's all about government agencies being in Capitals
