HMRC - newcastle city centre

Levelling up in the north east means moving jobs already in the north east into Newcastle to the detriment of the rest of the area
Isnt this because for years the decision makers and the quangos were based there. Why the regional assembly fell on its arse because the majority of the NE knew what would have happened. Only now since Sunderland has had some autonomy are we seeing Northern Spire, sstc3, riverside. I think you are totally correct, levelling up does mean moving jobs into Newcastle city centre even if it is to the detriment of the rest of the area.

This is reminder of the importance of getting the Durham coast line upgraded services to the ECML. It would have benefits for Middlesbrough, Hartlepool as well as Sunderland

It’s also a reason why it would be inhibitory for the metro to share that line.

Maybe Sunderland Hartlepool and Boro should campaign together to get the line upgraded and keep it metro free

It genuinely wouldn’t make any difference how good transport links etc are in Sunderland the HMRC regional centres are all destined to be major Cities and therefore NE site always going to be Newcastle.
Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff and Stratford etc

Sorry when I was referring to transport links it’s national links rather than local that I was referencing, and agree it was always destined to be in the U.K. core cities.

i agree about campaigning for more autonomy for Sunderland due to past decades of bias. I usually get shot down at this point…..along the lines, “it’s better for the region if everyone works together”

if history has shown us anything a “regional” approach has never served us well

You are mistaken Newcastle as a big city. It's not

Campaign all you want, there's always Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and plenty other cities instead. If I was bidding for an office block and one of the bids was a group of councils working together and providing a good bid and the other was three councils squabbling like school children with a PR disaster to come because I picked X over Y. I know where I'd choose.

If you want to get jobs in Sunderland fight for the stuff in Manchester or Leeds not Newcastle. The HMRC has always been in Newcastle (Longbenton). It's never been in Sunderland City Centre and it's not as if you can't travel from Sunderland to Newcastle anyway.

Pathetic rivalries outside of football and hinders the region.

You are correct either shot down or the favourite one "chips on shoulders" - you cant win.

Football rivalry aside (I never mentioned any football rivalry) , im suggesting a more a general point about how the place I live goes about it’s economic future how it campaigns for jobs and develops in non football terms. This is an important thing for the citizens of Sunderland to campaign for………again this is nothing to do with football rivalry more so it’s about getting the best deal for Sunderland

It’s the same tribal, backward looking posters arguing the Same dull points all the time man. They hate Newcastle cos of the football and they can’t see past that.

Newcastle City that's already full to bursting! It takes our lass over an hour just to get on to the felling by-pass when she's finished work, it's mental. There are so many locations that are far more suitable for projects like that.
There are also plenty of park and ride schemes that would allow her to get into the city centre tbf

spot on.

I really fail to see this argument how Sunderland is so hard done by. There isn’t many provincial towns that house the UK HQ of huge plc businesses like Arriva and Nike. Doxford Park has been the most detrimental thing to Sunderland having a thriving city centre, not Newcastle.

I am sure there are some HMRC people who post on here who might be able to give us the actual facts regarding this unless they are not allowed to give out the details.

We will see.
Funnily enough Jeff, I had cause to ring HMRC the other week and the friendly Geordie bloke engaged me in a convo about the weather having recognised a fellow north easterner. You'd fit in lovely

Whoa ………I don’t hate Newcastle

Wanting the best for Sunderland isn’t hating Newcastle

And when people they things are “good for the region “

They should remember Sunderland is also part of the region!

Fair what you say but if the shoe was on the other foot but it never is on the other foot is it ? This isnt a private company this is hmrc, who myself and thousands of other across the north east have to pay for and pay to. A private company can do and go where it wants but these are public jobs. I have never said these jobs should go to Sunderland but the argument seems to be they have always been in newcastle - end of, even if say Durham could have provided space for 9000 at a fraction of the cost.

I'm all for employment in city/town centres, good for the environment, walk, bus or cycle to work, no need for a car, therefore you keep more of your wages for the good things in life, and good for local businesses, pubs and shops etc. The jobs were probably moved from here to the likes of Washington and Longbenton anyway, Ridiculous having to travel to work by car to somewhere in the middle of nowhere with few facilities.

This was really terrible planning and it has had a detrimental affect on the city centre

hopefully they can eventually reverse this and put more commerce in Sunderland City Centre
