HMRC - newcastle city centre

The regional centre effectively replaces about 10 offices that were operational when that whole initiative started. Of course it will be cheaper.

I know folk will twist because it is benefitting Newcastle, but it is pretty good for the NE economy. And the impact on the offices/towns that must relocate? I would say pretty negligible. I mean HMRC's current set-up, with offices fairly isolated, mean the majority of people simply commute straight in and straight out and don't contribute to the local amenities.

main impact will be the loss of business rates income for each of the towns/cities which will have space closed down. That is of course unless the landlords can attract alternative businesses. Saying that the landlords will be liable for these until they demolish the premises or find the new tenant.

Thought Newcastle City Council was going green, anti car policies etc., etc.good job there's a reliable tram service into and out of the city:oops:
you would like to think that more projects like this would see more justification for investment in the transport infrastructure of the north east, and not just a railway line from consett...

Newcastle City that's already full to bursting! It takes our lass over an hour just to get on to the felling by-pass when she's finished work, it's mental. There are so many locations that are far more suitable for projects like that.
Same for my wife, back in the office at the Regents Centre and travels from Shields. Fortunately she works shifts and weekends so misses the rush hours but even at 8pm it’s nuts.

The train between regent centre and Gateshead after 4 is mental. There will definitely need to be changes to public transport

Yep that has been long established so Sunderland was out of the running years ago
The NE Regional Centre would only ever have been Newcastle.
I remember while being part of BOF discussions seeing mention of Washington and Longbenton being 15-20 minutes away “ as the crow flies”
There were genuinely people in HQ should we say, that didn’t have any understanding how something like the Tyne may make a seemingly short journey a massive pain in the arse.

Are they offering them subsidies?
No not with Homes England anyway. The then Chief Exec just didn't like having to get a taxi to Gateshead from central station when he visited. And the offices were run down.
They did need a relocation I just get pissed off when government work goes to the city in the region that least needs that employment there.

All these Civil Service office requirements are predicated on being within a 10 minute journey of an east coast mainline, which has meant places like Sunderland don’t even get a chance to bid for them.

I am sure there are some HMRC people who post on here who might be able to give us the actual facts regarding this unless they are not allowed to give out the details.

We will see.

I get the impression some already have.
They happen to be my 'home' department. I was only officially made aware Peterlee was closing in 2023, last week, so I've little to add.

So if the Durham coast line was fully electrified and improved would it mean Sunderland, Hartlepool et al would have a chance to bid. Fewer trains but guess they could then run faster. Diesel trains supposed to be off the network by 2030 - wont happen unless the glorified siding that is the durham coast line has something done - HS3 what a joke, HS anything would be a start. Imagine if hmrc moved out of newcastle as not part of the hs2 or hs3 strategy and some civil servant wants high speed to London. Leamside not happening either - so trains from Ferryhill etc never going to happen.

not sure, I think it’s used as a bit of a fudge if I’m honest to keep them in the U.K. core cities. Think Durham bid for either the DWP or HMRC requirement but didn’t get either.

There was a meeting about this today. My Mrs works there. The facts seem to be pretty much as reported on here.

It genuinely wouldn’t make any difference how good transport links etc are in Sunderland the HMRC regional centres are all destined to be major Cities and therefore NE site always going to be Newcastle.
Bristol, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff and Stratford etc
