Learning the guitar

@Joe Public
Guitar sorted mate. New strings on, ready for collection at your leisure. I will leave it in the car so the option to collect from my work is there, or meet up somewhere.
Hopefully this pic works....

Hi mate are you there today? A bit short notice but got a meeting in newcastle and could pop along before or after it if you’re about? Tried pming you but box is full.

Was bought a decent guitar for my 18th birthday along with money to book some lessons.

Spent the money on nights out and have never learned!

I'm now mid-thirties and want to start, it's still sitting there in the attic barely touched.

Do it. I bought my first one aged 18 (38 now) and never stuck at it. I borrowed one (well ended up being two actually) about 8 weeks ago and it’s clicking like it never did all those years ago. I’m really really happy with what I’ve learnt in this short space of time and, most importantly, I’m enjoying it immensely.

Good to meet you too mate, hope you enjoy the guitar.

Thank you for making a donation to Marie Curie, it is really appreciated. I'm a bit lost for words, you really didn't have to do that....but thank you.
It’s about a million times better than the boys! I’ve just mastered the intro to outside by staind which I couldn’t get at all on his! Mastered is exaggerating a bit like but ya knaa.
Excellent that, so pleased you're happy with it.
Just remember to keep tuning it as the strings are new and will stretch. You can gently pull then upwards from the fretboard to take some of the stretch out.
Keep at it, and enjoy it.

Question for the knowledgable folk on here...I've just got a new acoustic and it's been set up with 0.12 strings. I'm having a bit of discomfort with the strings and was thinking of moving to 0.11s (I'm more interested in playability/comfort than volume). If I did this would I need to get the guitar set up again?? Or could I just change the strings myself??

Try 10s first.

And you may get away with leaving the guitar as it is.

Try it - see how it feels for your hands and ears.

I think they're unsure what "set up" means.

@dafunk2

You can easily change the strings yourself without having to take it to someone, it's necessary because you'll always be breaking strings.
Unless you're going up to some ungodly gauge of string then swapping around between sets of .10s upto .14s etc won't have any significant effect on the guitar itself. As Jeff says, .10s are very light gauge and easier on the fingers but as you get more competent and used to how things sound you'll probably find yourself settling up around .11s or .12s as you get more tone and sustain. I find .10s a bit light for how I like to play acoustic but it's player's choice.

For most people playability is more important than “tone”

you have to want and enjoy picking up the guitar.

a lighter gauge will let you play chords more comfortably and have more fun.

good luck and let us know how you get on.
