Star Trek : Discovery

I'd add Prodigy to that. It's actually quite good and not just for kids. Disco and Picard are shite and the fact they pulled Disco from Netflix around the globe days before launch is really f***ing shitty.
I wont be paying for Paramount+, I'll just use torrents.
This is a silly gamble by CBS/Paramount
Disco season one was mixed. OK in retrospect I suppose, although would have been shite without Jason Isaacs. The Pike stuff in season two was good(I have high hopes for Strange New Worlds). Season three was an abomination. The worst trek ever.

Prodigy is surprisingly watchable(for some reason, it reminds me of Star Wars:The Bad Batch) It's funny seeing the 'Nickelodeon' logo splatted on the title screen mind 😄

Apparently not only with Discovery be delayed months now till Paramount+ is launched but you will also have to pay for a Sky subscription too. What a f***ing joke just a couple of days before it's supposed to air.

I've got a backup of that actually if anyone wants a copy

I am not even annoyed or miffed that I won’t get to see latest Discovery, that in itself shows how little I care that it is part of the franchise,
Mind you I did chuckle at this…. Those were the days, nipping into WH Smith in Durham once a month to pick the latest released cassette of TNG, DS9 and VOY…

Seems a daft decision, but everyone wants their own streaming platform now.

You had your basic broadcast channels for free and that was it. Extras you bought the video.

Then Sky came along and got really really expensive if you wanted sports and movies. But then you could only watch the movies they said when they said.

Then netflix came along and charged a reasonable rate, produced some shows of their own and also struck deals with many different TV production companies to have a really wide range. Pirating of TV disappeared within a year or two and people paid a reasonable amount for TV. There were a couple of other alternatives like iTunes/Apple TV or Amazon Prime

Now there are loads or streaming platforms springing up, some you might only subscribe to for one show, but if you have a few things you want to watch then the cost of multiple subscriptions gets back up to the Sky £60 per month.

Or you do what I did with The Mandalorian. Subscribe to Disney, watch the series, immediately unsubscribe and you get the single series for £5.99. Sign up again a year later for another month.

Though this one picking Discovery as the lure seems particularly daft. By IMDB ratings, Discovery is by far the worst Trek series. But also, the ratings have dropped massively. Series 3 had ratings starting at 7.1 for the first two but were mostly about 6.2, 6.3. One episode was 5.6. That is enough to have most shows axed completely.

Not sure thats true mind, the methods have changed, but I would say it's worse now then ever. Literally everyone I know has a firestick, and half of them don't even know what it's actually meant for, they use IPTV or showbox etc and think thats all it does. Very few of them would have the slightest idea on where to start with cardshare (sky or virgin), torrents, usenet, mIRC etc.

It will change again in the future when new encryption methods come in, especially for live tv, sky are already testing one out that the IPTV sellers seem to struggle with, and it seems to have affected card sharing too (on the very few that are still available). If the live tv disappears so will most the sellers, and most the 'catchup' content as the money is in selling it for the football.

Theres quite a backlash over this on social media, it's a stupid decision especially with a show like Star trek where there are loads of proper fans, what are they meant to do, stay off the internet till January as theres no way they will be able to completely avoid spoilers. The cast weren't even aware of this until it hit the press today, and were promoting it as starting this week when they were in London a few days ago.

While that is true and shit in itself, the difference here is that is happened 3 days before the show was supposed to air. They were promoting the damn thing in London not so long ago. Paramount+ doesn't have enough content to warrent a subscription and the rumour is that you'll need a Sky subscription to even get the Paramount+ subscription. So there is several layers of shit on top of the existing shit of the multitude of splintered streaming services.

Fair point. I suppose the way people are doing it are changing.

I work at a university and we used to be bombarded with cease and desist warnings from copyright holders because of students filesharing/bittorrent. These days we never get anything like that. But it is harder for them to track down if someone is a streaming consumer.

Last time we were able to do a breakdown on our incoming traffic, after 5pm, Netflix, Amazon Prime and iPlayer dominate by a long long way, which suggests that for students at least a lot of the traffic is legal. But if 200 people use a firestick with 200 different illegal streams, that will show up as a count of one for each stream vs perhaps a count of 200 for Netflix.

Yeah, making a failing show really difficult to watch at the last minute is not the greatest business move.

It could become a kick for strong female roles in science fiction too. "Look, now an all female crew" as viewing figures nose dive. A bit like the first female Doctor Who, then give her really shit plot lines to work from where there is rarely a danger or threat so very little drama. It gains that feeling of 'we made it female and it failed', but being a bit more female was not the cause.

It's daft, just means that people who are interested will pirate it rather than sub to something new.

We have Netflix, Prime, and Disney+ in my house. Disney+ is only worth it now it's gained Fox content. Prime is only worth it for next day delivery and though the TV offerings have improved in the last couple of years I probably wouldn't sub without the delivery service. No chance in hell of subscribing to something new. Streaming is becoming saturated, it's a victim of it's own success in many ways with companies all wanting a slice of the pie, shame but not surprising.

I subscribe to Netflix, and it's the only TV service I pay for, although I do have prime, but thats because I pay for it for the free next day delivery, not for the TV content. I subscribed to Netflix for Discovery when it first started and have kept it going since then.

There isn't a chance I'll pay for this series, even when it is available. £25ish for a basic Sky sub, then plus whatever it is for Paramount, and tied into an 18 month contract, so cost wise it would be £450 + any cost of paramount to watch a dozen or so episodes of a not very good series. Not a chance of that happening, but my only choices are to do that and not watch it till January, or I just open my newsreader, see Star.Trek.Discovery.S04E01.1080p.WEB.H264-CAKES is already there and download it to watch today.

Or wait a bit and pay £20 for the DVDs on Amazon.

Although they are seen as a bit old school, for something more than a year old, DVD can still be the most economical and legal way of watching something. There are a few older films I have fancied and either could not find them on a streaming service or had to subscribe to god knows what to get it, or pay £4 for a bit of plastic & platinum.

Yeah, I'll wait for the full season to be done, then grab a full season job.
Unless there's a 4k release coming, in which case I'll wait for that.

Problem with that is, I don't have a DVD player, and avoiding spoilers for a year, which for something like this, will be pretty impossible :(

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind paying for things, and if I had Sky already, then I would probably wait till Jan and get Paramount, but lets face it, Discovery isn't exactly great, and theres no chance of me paying that sort of money to watch it. Problem is, I don't watch any live TV, can't remember the last time I did, I had Sky at my old place and paid for it for around 2 years (and the TV license), for the last year I had unplugged the box to decorate and didn't even plug it back in. I have IPTV and think it's been a month since I opened it up, I mainly pay for it as I share it with a friend and my daughter, rather than for me. Just doesn't make financial sense to pay for something like this.

DVD, in standard def?
Paying money for that? Ouch.

Jayneway / Kate did this with a lot of class decades ago. CBS/Para have went back 60 years with attitudes.

Or just torrent it. That's what I'll be doing

I think I'm more likely to shrug it off. I would have watched it eventually but now it is going to take effort and it has not been good, they have lost a viewer. I suspect I'll be the majority.

hadnt realised this was back until it popped up on my rss feed...to...remind me...to buy....whatever service its on

wonder how this one previously unmentioned lassie is gonna save the universe entirely by herself this time. i wonder if she'll disobey orders at some point. ooooh. the tension.

Well I watched the new episode and once again Burnham has to single handily save the day and she's not just arguing with an admiral this time but the f***ing president of the UFP.
At this point I think they are deliberately taking the piss
6/10
This week's Prodigy was better.
