UK hotel prices

Thowt about hiring a car to get back to Sunderland for Christmas. £500 for 6 days, four of which it'll be sitting on the drive.

Outcome: I'm not hiring a car to drive home for Christmas.

Are they taking the piss or what?

Me and the good lady normally have a night away for our anniversary 1st weekend of the year, looked at York and Edinburgh, f***ing £400 to £600 a night for City Centre hotels.

Prices seem to have trebled since two years ago!

Edinburgh prices have been disgraceful for ages, mate. When I’ve worked up there, I always have to stop in a guest house right at the bottom of that long road, just to get a half decent price.
Airbnb might be a more reasonable option.

No chance of using Enterprise or another that has a base up here? You could hand the car back after your drive up and hire another for the return trip when you need it.

Car hire gets daft sometimes. Usually we'd fly over to NI for a week or so in the summer and hire a car over there. Was cheaper to get the ferry over with our own in the summer.

Car hire prices are extortionate everywhere right now. Firms sold off their stock to survive the pandemic and haven't yet built up their stocks due to supply problems from the manufactures. Increasing demand (many people still avoiding public transport) and low supply always leads to increased prices.

I’ve noticed how expensive Edinburgh is now I used to be a regular visitor but I won’t pay what they are charging at the moment. Air b n b is always worth a look though.
