Whisky

Doing a charity silent stills tasting for my local whisky group early next month. Looking like an interesting lineup:

Garnheath 42yo: That Boutique-y Whisky Co
Littlemill 24yo: Whisky-Fassle
Caperdonich 21yo: Acorn
Brechin 28yo: Douglas Laing
Imperial 26yo: Elixir Distillers
Glen Albyn 26yo: First Cask
Rosebank 17yo: Murray McDavid
Pittyvaich 28yo: Diageo Special Edition

Optional Extras:
Port Ellen 28yo: Old Bothwell
Glenury Royal 20yo: Duncan Taylor
Millburn 18yo: Rare Malts

There’s a few distilleries in there I’ve never tried.
Wowza some unicorns there, if carlsberg did tastings !

I should really get around to doing a lot more charity work...

We usually have a ‘whisky heels’ charity event for our pre Christmas get together where people bring bottles with just a few drams left in them to sell to other members and venue patrons. Unfortunately, not tenable with the ongoing covid situation. Raising money for the homeless charity, Simon on the Streets this year.

Interesting indeed, I wouldn't fancy paying for that lot.

Only £50 per head for the first 8 too. Unsurprisingly, it’s looking like our most popular event of the year.

how does it work ?
Do you have a set kitty, do you buy bottles for each tasting then split costs, do you buy samples or full bottles ( guessing in respect of silent stills not very easy)

Always wondered how funded/ costed

It varies. Some bottles/tastings are purchased via club funds. Dram shares consist of people bringing in their own bottles and occasionally we get a brand ambassador in with their whiskies. Very seldomly we’ll each buy a pre made sample pack from somewhere. For this, I’m providing the whisky.

Anybody a fan of Glen Scotia's seasonal releases? Last year's was a double sherry 11 yo for £65, didn't fancy that one. This year is a 12yo bourbon, 12 month finish in Oloroso for £75. I'm more inclined to go for this one.

I got their 14yo Tawny Port festival release 2020 and enjoyed it. Much easier to get than Springbank, but same price as the Bunna 12 CS which I grudged so didn't buy.

Any thoughts, I'm not expecting it to fly off the shelves so I'm taking my time to consider...

Glen Scotia is a marmite distillery for me being honest. I love their cask strength Victoriana, I really liked the tawny port you speak of too, however their core range leaves something to be desired IMHO. The double cask is rotten, and even the 15 and 18 for me taste off. Plenty of people refer to that as Campbeltown funk and I don't mind a slightly dirty, sour influence in a whisky at times but going off my limited tasting of both (the 15 and 18) I still need some convincing.

Cheers for that.

I agree, the double cask was a joke. I've got a bottle of 15 unopened, might as well crack it to try.

I had ordered the Victoriana from FineDrams but it was caught up in the Brexit import duty fiasco and returned without clearing customs.

Now you've got me debating between Victoriana and the Seasonal release.

I'm no further forward, I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure etc etc.

It could be that the 15 (and the 18 as well I suppose) get better some way down the bottle, I've certainly found that before in fact that's what happened with the tawny port for me. My first few glasses I wasn't convinced however after my fourth or fifth it finally dropped and yeah, I really like that one.

My experience of the 15 and 18 were dram sized bottles which I picked up from the distillery shop.

Victoriana isn't what I expected it to be but it was really good nonetheless from the offset, it doesn't seem like a cask strength whisky going off how easy it is to sip. It's sweet and has a quite syrupy mouthfeel however has spice and a touch of smokiness too. A great all rounder and the one I'd pick as a regular sipper from what they have on offer. Mind if I could afford the 25 not sure that statement would remain...

I liked their Festival edition earlier in the year, and a red wine finish which I don’t always get along with.

Meant to add Victoriana to incoming Fine Drams order but by then had ordered too much…parcel now at Customs so we’ll see what I’m charged this time

What is it, Chichibu ?
Hakushu. Hoping to get to the distillery on my next Japan visit.
.
White Peaks Distillery first release is available for pre-order if anyone is bothered. £70 inc. postage for a 3 year old whisky though…..
Might be worth making the trip to acquire one if that's the case. Would really appreciate a heads up when it's due to drop if you'd be so kind
Looks like the 21yo is landing in the next 2-3 weeks alongside a 10 and 15. There'll also be a Kilkerran Heavily Peated, Hazelburn 10 and NAS Longrow.
