Squid Game

How anyone can enjoy this is beyond me. The acting is exceptionally awful. The main character is not likeable in the slightest, couldn't give a hoot if he is eliminated.

Also the narrative is utterly predictable. It's like something a first year film student would write. I managed the first two episodes and 20 minutes of the third before giving up, and it's rare I bin off something I've started watching.

It's not particularly original as an idea either, but then barely anything is these days. Positives are the visuals are quite good, the arena on the first game was pretty good. I honestly can't think of anything else good about it.

It has Seoul but no soul.

A disappointing 1.5/4 from Mux.
Literally millions would disagree. The acting especially in later episodes is actually pretty f***ing great. Hard to get attached to and empathise with characters when reading subtitles but think they wrote in some really good characters that put in some fine performances.

May not be totally original but it is all about timing for some things. The anti-capitalist message runs deep and the story is well told throughout.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage - Just as daft as the first one, and entertaining enough. I can't help but feel though that there's actually a decent film to be had here if they just went full on buddy movie with it and played it as an all out comedy. The Eddie/ Venom exchanges, like in the first are what makes it so watchable.
6/10

Halloween Kills - Michael Myers is probably the most hardcore he's ever been, but unfortunately this is at the expense of tension, scares and anything resembling a plot. Loads of filler as you just wait for Michael to go from one, admittedly entertaining, rampage to the next. It's a fun enough slasher movie though and worth a look for fans of the franchise. Carpenters score as always, is a treat to hear in the cinema.

Is that the same as 3/8 ?
Will give this a watch, cheers mate.
It's brilliant, 7/8 for me.

Promising Young Woman - 6/10

As much as I enjoyed this, after hearing all the praise from critics and getting multiple recommendations from friends, I wanted to like it more. It’s just such an odd film tonally. On a first watch, it didn’t manage to get the balance right between feminist revenge catharsis and mean-spirited man hating. The juxtaposition of having sickly coloured gritty scenes with trashy, bubble-gum montages was clearly deliberate but it was difficult to see what the intentions were. Some sequences were akin to the sort of trashy nonsense that you'd expect to see in a Russ Meyer film.

Carey Mulligan is one hell of a leftfield casting choice, and it deserves credit for originality. The final act has a genuine WTF moment that almost had me shouting at the TV screen. You can see why it got the Oscar for best original screenplay. I’m just not sure exactly how I was supposed to feel during that scene. So much of what comes before feels like an exploitation B-movie, which lessens the impact of what I assume was meant to be a hard-hitting, sobering moment.

Either I’ve missed the point somewhere or it’s a case of an inexperienced director’s ideas not fully meshing. Having since listened to interviews with debut director Emerald Fennell, I look forward to giving it a second watch one day and hopefully getting a clearer idea of Fennell’s intentions.
Please watch the Towering Inferno and come back with your review?

Yeah I know it's extremely popular, but in fairness if you look at the "Top 10 in the UK" list at any given time on Netflix its chock full of absolute nonsense so popularity isn't always a good barometer of quality Trav lad!

Maybe I haven't given it enough time in that case, but I can't see anything that could be considered a fine acting performance in the first two episodes and I watch a lot of foreign fillums so the subtitle thing doesn't bother me.

I might carry on watching another couple and see if my opinion can be changed.

Pointypool - haven’t watched it since it was released 2008. Decent zombie style movie with a twist thereby people are infected via a virus transmitted through language. 6/10

Old. M night shyamalan film

People trapped on a beach ageing super fast, canny idea like, thought the actors were poor though.
Decent watch overall I thought.

Just watched Spotlight for the first time. The best film I've watched in a long time. Amazing performances from the cast, particularly Keaton. A truly harrowing true story.
Hard watch but really good film.

I just turned it off, inside the hospital was shambolic, I was losing the will to live so I give it a charitable 4/10 😳

Dune - 8/10. Well made, scI-fi shite for adults. Good performances. Aquaman fantastic and Rebecca Ferguson gives Francesca Annis a run for the money in the MILF stakes. Just needed more Toto.

Read all the books about twice so I’m biased.

Very true to the books, love the fremen and Baron. Can’t wait for Feyd Rautha in the next one (hopefully)

Chamolet was great as Paul as well and Rebecca Ferguson spot on as Jessica !

Took the missus and had to build mental barriers in case she didn’t like it but she really enjoyed.

10/10
