Hellraiser (1987)

Deserved classic, excellent film and worthy of it's reputation. Good at atmosphere building, SFX not bad. 7/10

Stepmom (1998)

Predictable and pretty dull. 4/10

In order of disappearance. 2014 Scandi film starring Stellan Skarsgard as a snow plough driver who's son is murdered. Really good comedy revenge movie set in snowy Norway. Remade as Cold Pursuit with Liam Neeson. Which wasn't very good.

Having watched the recent Val Kilmer documentary, I decided to watch ‘the doors’. Always wanted to watch it but just never got round to being in the mood or finding the time. Being a fan of most of Oliver Stone’s work I stuck it on.

I don’t claim to know a lot about the group, I only really know the popular singles. Kilmer’s portrayal of Jim Morrison is uncanny having seen footage of concerts and interviews. The film just centres around the rise of the group, specifically Jim and the abuse he placed on himself and everyone around him, with his large intake of drugs and alcohol. Ultimately proving to be fatal.

With it being on for over 2hrs, I didn’t get a lot from the film once it had finished, it was well made and acted. But you are never sure how much of this stuff is really true?

Think I enjoyed the Val Kilmer documentary more. Interesting and sad at the same time.

The Doors 6.5/10 for the lizard king and his leather strides.

Promising Young Woman - 6/10

As much as I enjoyed this, after hearing all the praise from critics and getting multiple recommendations from friends, I wanted to like it more. It’s just such an odd film tonally. On a first watch, it didn’t manage to get the balance right between feminist revenge catharsis and mean-spirited man hating. The juxtaposition of having sickly coloured gritty scenes with trashy, bubble-gum montages was clearly deliberate but it was difficult to see what the intentions were. Some sequences were akin to the sort of trashy nonsense that you'd expect to see in a Russ Meyer film.

Carey Mulligan is one hell of a leftfield casting choice, and it deserves credit for originality. The final act has a genuine WTF moment that almost had me shouting at the TV screen. You can see why it got the Oscar for best original screenplay. I’m just not sure exactly how I was supposed to feel during that scene. So much of what comes before feels like an exploitation B-movie, which lessens the impact of what I assume was meant to be a hard-hitting, sobering moment.

Either I’ve missed the point somewhere or it’s a case of an inexperienced director’s ideas not fully meshing. Having since listened to interviews with debut director Emerald Fennell, I look forward to giving it a second watch one day and hopefully getting a clearer idea of Fennell’s intentions.

John wick 3, whey what can I say ?....it was a veritable feast of craziness / violence and hilarious at times for its outlandish story.
John is in the shit, nigh on everybody is out to kill him so he has to kill them to get out of the shit.
I'd give it a solid 7/10, Keanu Reeves is the consummate professional.

f***ing hell. Hark at Barry Norman here.
Bit intense that review marra. This is the smb man 😉
Rise Of The Footsoldier 5/10.

Worst of the entire franchise. It really needs to be the last.
Which one? Original one. 9f so that’s gash

3,4 and 5 are good. Marbella as personal favourite guilty pleasure.

Dune [2021] 9/10
Fans of the book will love it's density, casual viewers may feel it's overlong (2hr20m). Especially given most of the movie feels like a set-up for future film(s).
Visually gorgeous with excellent performances, particularly Rebecca Ferguson.
F**K knows when part two will come out. 2023/4?

Just finished this.
Totally agree, including a surprisingly good turn by Rebecca Ferguson
