I actually find that plausible tbh.

The Saudis told our government to make it happen. We know that bin Salman sent a text to Johnson demanding that it went ahead. We always try to do whatever they ask anyway. Both Raab and Johnson indicated publicly that they’d prefer it to go ahead.

As a man who we know is in breach of numerous laws and regulations related to working practices at any one time, Ashley may well have calculated that it is worth his while to keep the government onside by selling to their preferred bidder. Accepting a slightly lower price in the short term might be more profitable for him long term.

But United pride are now saying that it will let them have a dialog with the Saudis, isn't that an admission that it is really the Saudi royals behind it, when fan groups and Staveley herself keep reiterating they're totally nothing to do with them.
