Insulate Britain

What would be your alternative way of drawing attention to this? Like them or hate them, Extinction Rebellion were a force for change a couple of years back and their methods were broadly similar to this, disruption of daily life.

There wont be a protest in history that hasn't pissed off a group of people. It'll always happen.
What change did Extinction Rebellion bring about other than play a part in the Tory narrative about bringing in tougher laws against protest?

And you seem to be conflating protest and deliberate disruption.

They brought decarbonisation to the top of the agenda and helped to change the parameters of what we need be doing to achieve that asap. The fact they're so controversial keeps these things in the news and the pressure on. Look at how we talk about the climate emergency now compared to 3 years ago, it's like night and day.

How am I conflating the two? This is a civil disobedience protest, it's supposed to cause deliberate disruption.
Laws incoming hopefully to halt silly stunts like this. A 6 month stint in jail would nip it in the bud fairly quickly.
I don't understand this at all. Outlawing protest is anti-democratic and a really worrying path to go down.

So is blocking the M25. Protest peacefully by all means, in a civil manner without causing mayhem.

Do you think its a good idea to sit in the middle of the M25, climb on a train roof etc?

I’d say it was Greta Thunberg and the burning, flooding, collapsing world (great name for a band), along with the associated economic hit that amplified existing concerns worldwide.

But yeah, you carry on believing it’s those middle class saviours from London who took a kicking when they tried to stop the average Joe getting the tube that were responsible.

And for the conflation I’m just pointing out that protests don’t have to be disruptive. You can draw attention without disruption.

There's a time and a place to hold protests, not on a busy Motorway, potentially causing a mass pile up.
He’s got a point tho hasn’t he? Had they staged a peaceful protest outside of parliament nobody would be discussing it but by blocking a motorway, no matter how annoying it is, means it’s far more newsworthy.

It is a peaceful protest tbf. Without civil disobedience the protest is highly unlikely to generate any publicity which is their main goal. It's main page news.

ER played a key role in putting this back on the table. They amplified the messages from GT and made national news as they sat in the middle of Oxford Circus for a week. I don't know why people try to play it down like they did nothing. It was big news and helped the cause. No one is saying they did it alone.

The tube thing was a massive own goal but it came at the end of the main protests (iirc). They'd done what they needed to before those knobs shot themselves in the foot. I don't care about what class they were either, completely irrelevant.

A woman who had a stroke ended up paralyzed, as her son couldn't get her to hospital quick enough as he was stuck in traffic through these clowns.. but hey, they got on the news.

See above, if it was your mam how would you feel?
Behave man. They shouldn't be on the motorway
Clearly on a wind up.

You might think differently if a load of kids died in a pile up though?

I think you’re kidding yourself. I think they were probably a net negative to the cause.

Thankfully the peaceful protests of Greta Thunberg gained worldwide attention and focus to such an extent the net negative was small.

And it wasn’t that the tube thing came at the end of their protests per se, but that the tube thing ended their protests. It was such an own goal.
