*~*~* Fleetwood v Sunderland match thread *~*~*

People think that bringing on the third centre back helps us to weather the storm every match when the other team suddenly has us on the ropes because they've "come out with fight". Seem a bit of a coincidence that this happens every week?

We create the situation by lowering the tempo and dropping deep half way through the second half and then we make it even worse by sticking on another defender. Sometimes we get away with it following a lot of head tennis and blocks on the line. Today we didn't (despite another huge block on the line).

Firstly it's the first time it's happened this season in that we've lost or drawn because of it.

Secondly it was the result of an aerial bombardment that Alves came onto the field in the 90th minute when we'd already conceded once and were facing that bombardment as we couldn't getnoutndue to fleetwood pressure. The substitution was the result of that, not the cause.

Like I said the cause was the second half as a whole and not dealing with the fleetwood threat, despite getting a 2nd half goal. We lost the midfield battle and the defence was suspect way waaay before Alves came on.

Regarding the tempo - Fleetwood lost the ball immediately after they gained possession 1st half. 2nd half they put more pressure on us and retained the ball better, which after the first half you would expect them to do. Absolutely nothing to do with us 'lowering the tempo' as such and dropping back in defensive terms, we just couldn't maintain the tempo we had and didn't adjust. Losing a midfielder for a striker just added to that and we were outnumbered centrally.

Stewart is playing very well but the three behind him will not score enough scrappy goals in and around the six yard box.

Gooch, Embleton and McGeady will all score a handful from distance but we need more.

We need a player who is pissed off when he doesn’t score. Not sure if Broadhead could be that player, but who else have we got?

Mad how people can't see the shirt pull but it's the SMB way I suppose. Wright gets his right arm around their player and grabs the shirt where the red meets the white side to pull him down and ends up pulling the shirt right up he holds him there.

You can see his white top underneath unless he wears his shorts like Bullard?
Penalty all day.

If it'd been the other way round, we'd be screaming for it.

Excellent from Johnson in that interview. That refs going to need to give 15-20 penalties in every game now.

That said, I am not a fan of the “negative” substitution 20 mins for the end. That’s a separate discussion.

looks to me could have given 2 pens there. one for handball, one for holding.
Watching again it seems that O'Nien kicks the header up into the air. He did have an arm in there and I recalled this post as I thought it could be handball but obviously can't see it on the video. Though watching the Fleetwood player's reaction, it's well after the ball has gone and none signal for handball but more look at where Wright is with arms outstretched.

Exactly this. Has to be 20 penalties a game if that’s a penalty. No consistency in decision making whatsoever

It was a penalty, because the referee saw an offence in the penalty area normally punishable by a direct free kick . The ball was placed on the penalty spot so a player could have a single shot on goal defended only by the goalkeeper. I really don't know why people find this difficult to understand. :)

Bed wetters of the world unite.
Seriously, get a grip folks. OK it’s been a big disappointment today buts it’s not the end of the world. If you’d offered me today’s league position at the start of the season I’d have snatched your friggin hand off.
