Graham Clark and championship cricket

His form in T20 has been good for the past 2 seasons and his batting in this season's RL cup has been exceptional. I watched him today and the controlled manner in which he made that big hundred was superb.
Just wondering what others think about giving him another go in championship cricket and by that I mean he plays in all the remaining championship matches.
For me the plus side is he looks a far more mature batsmen now and could do a job for us batting at 5 or 6 certainly not at the top of the order.
The down side is that he has basically struggled for the best part of a decade to be a regular in any form of the game and that it might be better for him and Durham just to concentrate on being a specialist opener in one day cricket.
At the end of the day it's probably his decision and what's best for him over the next 5 or so years. just wondering what others think?

He played at Edgbaston but was then left out for the last game at home to Notts. I don’t think anyone would begrudge him a spot at 6 (for example) or maybe even 7 in a stacked batting lineup.

It’s a completely different game though.

When people were criticising him for not getting scores they were mainly thinking of his championship form - those defending him pointed at his limited overs capability and he's now doing better than ever in that regard. I'd say no, not at present to avoid adding unnecessary complications when things are going well. But it's a thought for next season.

Did he not just come in as a last minute replacement fro Stokes at Edgbaston. Agree with it being a completely different game though.

Yeah iam probably in that side of the fence.

He is technically good but I think he needs to feel bat on ball. I think he has become so good at the one day stuff because he doesn’t have to focus on leaving the ball, batting time and the responsibility for getting out to bad shots. I say leave him be.

He's a good lad who I've got to know well and he's fighting bloody hard for a new contract which I hope he gets. It's a no brainer to give him a chance in the red ball game once it resumes and with Bancroft likely away back to Australia, there is absolutely no harm in giving Clark a well deserved chance. He was outstanding today, just need to see him bat better in the red ball game. If he can crack that, he's more than useful. Really hope we keep him.

You obviously know him better than anyone on here. Do you know if he wants to play red ball cricket?
I can't see us not offering him another contract it maybe more stopping other counties signing him.

For me he has to be given another go in red ball cricket. I think some of his problems stem from having to bat too high up the order when we suffered the enforced relegation and front line batsmen left. I seem to recall him batting as high as 3 which obviously does not suit his skill set. You also have to factor in that at this time he would be predominantly batting at the Riverside with the no toss rule being used by the opposition and we would be inserted into bat, in seam friendly conditions, and typically be all out before lunch. I would've imagined this shattered his confidence and a downward spiral in form was the result. I am convinced that he is capable of batting in red ball cricket but it needs to be lower down the order somewhere around 5 or 6.

Exactly-given this season's white ball form I can imagine Surrey sniffing particularly with his brother there to help bend ears.
Not so sure about giving him another opportunity in red ball cricket. Jones seems to be establishing himself in the middle order in red ball cricket and I've been very impressed with Doneathy. Also Bell, Crawshaw and Bushnell also showing potential. Door seems to be closing on Burnham.

Not sure what has happened to Bushnell after those 2nd XI T20 matches earlier in the season he looked nailed on to be the next academy player to get a chance to step up.
Definitely with Clark now there would be plenty of other counties would sign him. Hopefully we can get him tied down with a contract and opportunities he is happy with.
Funny old game begining of April he is probably thinking " if I have a bad season I could be out if the pro game in September"

Yup he's desperate to play, hopefully he gets a chance. See how it goes but he's done himself the world of good recently.

As someone above has said, he will be in with a chance of a 100 contract next season.

He's a good lad and whatever happens to him, I just hope he gets fixed up with a contract somewhere.

There hasn't been a great deal of Second XI since then and of course we had to drop out of the semi finals.

I was far more impressed with Bushnell than Doneathy in all those Second XI T20 matches but fair play to the latter who has grabbed his chance with both hands to such an extent that I feel he is being under bowled and also should be coming in before Trevaskis in the batting line up.

Likewise about Bushnell what I saw of him in the 2nds, but Doneathy looks a cracking player mind. Agree about his bowling and batting also. Nice headache to have

Well that's good news so basically it's down to the championship skipper and management if they give him a chance and by that I mean an extended run. It will be interesting to see the line up for our next championship match.

Yeah Doneathy an interesting one he was picked for England u19s as a 17 year old which shows he has some pedigree nationally but when you look at his stats since for the 2nds and even Benwell Hill in the NEPL there nothing special. Yet this run in the first XI he has looked a very competent cricketer with a good temperament.
