Celebrities who dont speak their local accent.

Such an incredibly ignorant comment, crackers.

It's not like. I learned it.

It's not like.

I didn't mean you, you berk.

Nee one ‘loses’ their accent like, bairns aside. They make a concerted effort to change it. Maggots.
My mam reckons I 'tark posh cos you went to university'. But I've lived in Leicester longer than I ever lived in Sunderland, and when I first got here with a broad Mackem accent I had to modify it a bit to mack mesel understood. The number of times I had people with that look on their faces that says 'I didn't understand a word of that but I'm pretending to...'. So it just changes, a mixture of deliberate, to make sure you're understood, and a bit of natural local acclimatisation.
There will be people who's accents will change the more they are around other people. It's just what happens.
Aye - Schteeeve McLaren for example, when he became Dutch.

Aye I see what you're saying....REJECTING YOUR ROOTS AND PRETENDING TO BE SOMETHING YOU'RE NOT.

I still get that after 15 year, no change in accent though, refuse to see it. Just speak slower and wait for it to get through the straw between their ears.

John Barrowman

love how the OP has clearly tried to have a dig at geordies but hoyed a few in so it doesn’t look like he is.

East Riding is a very different accent to Hull mind you

Aye. I was being a little unspecific. I am in East Yorkshire but the people who mostly think I sound posh are some of Mrs Kaplan’s friends and relatives from Hull.

I can categorically say that's bollocks.
English Language A -Level will tell you that's bollocks.

Potential Scots influence there

So are you suggesting it's the other way round that you make a concerted effort to keep the accent?

It is weird how some lose it after only a few years & yet others don't after decades of moving away.
