F1 2021

Finally a decent season, and they scrap the formula!
I think the regulations next season will promote more wheel to wheel racing up and down the grid. The problem comes if the FIA keep penalising drivers for racing as they have in Austria and Silverstone, because ultimately it will lead to drivers either backing out of moves because of the risk of a penalty, or the driver being passed trying to 'buy' a penalty by deliberately allowing themselves to be run off the track.

F1 as a whole needs to accept that sometimes two drivers will come together when racing and there isn't always one of them to blame. Unfortunately, the default position of the stewards now is that if there has been a crash, someone must be to blame.

Another take on things

Indeed.
The truth is, if they both crashed out, I don't think there would have been any penalty on Lewis.

Just look a the video in Jolyon's article just posted.
A few corners before, Max wasn't even alongside, but Lewis didn't turn in on him, he gave him space because you don't want to cause a contact when you are on the outside - because you are most at risk.
Its sensible. Max doesn't do sensible.

I dunno. It seems to me like the DRS has made a farce of overtaking, while getting rid of gravel removed the penalties for stupid racing.

What you have now is guys making suicidal moves that in the Stewart era would have got people killed. In addition, having tarmac runoffs has largely reduced the risk, which just promotes even more dangerous driving.

These 18" wheel and tyres tests that have been happening: do they need to adjust the cars at all for them? Thinking mainly suspension components due to less 'give' in the tyres and the weight differences.

They will need to eventually. Whether they can dial that in with the current suspensions is another matter.

They can soften the suspension to some degree, I'm sure for a small fee by the FIA/Pirrelli they could make some one off 'springs'.

Oh of course, for the purposes of the tests, just staying off the kerbs will probably be enough to reduce the suspension requirement enough to actually test the tyres.

The huge benefit of course is that suspension is damped, whereas the travel in the tyres - currently about 50% of the total travel in the car! - isn't. So the cars will be far more stable now.

Less torque though, iirc.

18 inch wheels will look shit, might as well cover over the open wheels and start doing 24 hour endurance races all these gimmicks they’re doing.

Bring back the v10s man

Aston Martin test was 110 laps yesterday, they'll not be doing quali but still putting 600km in on a car not really designed for it is good work from the engineers.

Looking forward to next year.

I agree with this, racing incident.

Has Max criticised Hamiltons driving yet? Apart from saying Hamiltons celebration were disrespectful I don't think I've heard any.

In my opinion Max wasn't given a penalty because what would be the point, he was already out of the race. A 10 second pause before attaching a drip would be a bit over the top if you ask me!

Good analysis that. I like the but where he said hamilton didn't stick a wheel up the inside at Copse against max but did against Leclerc.

I said before I feel hamilton only got a penalty becuase he didn't retire from the race.

Ok lads let’s get some perspective here.

1979 GP at Dijon - that’s France by the way!

Rene Arnoux and Gilles Villeneuve had a banging fight that would be unimaginable nowadays but it is one of the most memorable GPs of all time.

Just google 1979 French GP and there are some great articles about it and some interviews with Rene.

A different time!!!

Good that. Would be good if the 2022 cars return to this kind of racing. Although I'm sure there would be penalties if that was the last lap of a race next season.

Please tell me I wasn't the only one that thought about them people on the track as they were about as close as cars get going over the finish line .

Safety pah!

Jackie Stewart used to tape a spanner to the back of his steering wheel to aid removal if he was trapped the car!!!
